Here are the top three stories today in Chattanooga:
- Hamilton County District Attorney Republican candidates Neal Pinkston and Coty Wamp held a debate at the Chattanooga Kiwanis Club on Tuesday evening. The two candidates discussed gang violence, drug dealings, and prosecutor positions, among other topics. Republican voters will choose between Pinkston and Wamp on May 3 in the primary election. (MyFox Chattanooga)
- Earlier this week, Hamilton County honored its local Vietnam War veterans for Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Day. Over 150 Hamilton County residents reportedly lost their lives in the war. Prisoner of War John Sparks was recognized by County Mayor Jim Coppinger as the 2022 Hamilton County Patriot. The Mayor described Sparks as “the true definition of an unsung hero who finished as an E-6 Sergeant and is the longest-serving Hamilton County POW.” (WDEF News 12)
- A new Tennessee bill is making it easier for retirees to help fill in the gaps at understaffed local schools. The bill, which will remain in effect through 2025, allows retirees who choose to come back to work for a full year instead of the current 120-day allowance. “I think it’s a wonderful idea,” said Beverly Sharrock, a newly-retired Hamilton County school teacher with 30 years of experience. “Retirees have a wealth of knowledge.”(MyFox Chattanooga)
