Colden board approves disc golf course at Kummer Town Park
COLDEN – Residents within the Town of Colden will soon have a new outdoor activity to try at Kummer Town Park, with the addition of a new disc golf course. The Colden Town Board, at its April 14 meeting, approved to move forward with the design and planning of a new disc golf course.
The disc golf course will be located on the land adjacent to the current Kummer Town Park, which the town acquired in 2019. Supervisor James DePasquale said the project will be completed with ARPA funding. Councilmember Patricia Zurbrick also made a suggestion that the town’s recreation department look into having a workshop on disc golf to teach new players in the town.
Along with the disc golf course, DePasquale also noted other projects happening within the park including resurfacing the tennis court and basketball court, with the addition of a line of pickleball, and an upcoming Eagle Scout project from Josh Sullivan for a hiking trail with benches through the woods.
Zurbrick and DePasquale also reminded residents about the upcoming open house event for the Colden Fire Company on Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event will feature live demonstrations with equipment, activities for kids and it will allow people to learn more about joining the local fire company. With the Colden Fire Company needing new members, DePasquale, who is also a member of the Colden Fire Company, urged people to look into joining one of the many positions within the company, whether it’s as a firefighter, EMT, fire police, auxiliary member or a social member.
“We want to train the younger people of what we do and what we deal with at fires because that is how we all learned,” DePasquale said. “What we are looking for is people who are willing to give up time volunteering for their community. There is a serious sense of self-satisfaction when you help somebody in their most trying time because that’s what we are doing.
“The towns need the people to band together to take care of each other because if a small town like us has to go to a paid service, it would be detrimental to the tax base,” DePasquale added. “Anybody can be part of a company and help out. There are many different opportunities to help during an emergency.”
