Play It Again Sports in North Olmsted ready for busy spring season – Morning Journal
Play It Again Sports, a small retail sports store in North Olmsted, is ready for the upcoming spring season after moving to its new location a little over six months ago.
The retail business, just one of the many in a chain originating in Minneapolis, took over an outlet at 25151 Lorain Road in the fall of 2021 to accommodate its growth.
Scott Trayers, branch manager, said Play It Again Sports offers a variety of sporting equipment to their customers.
When asked why he got into the business of sports, Trayers laughed.
“It is a family business,” he said. “We used to shop here, and all of our kids play sports, so it just seemed like a natural fit.”
When the previous owner put the old shop up for sale, Trayers said he had been looking for an occupational change and decided to give managing a sports store a try.
Since then, he said he has blossomed in the business.
The shop used to be just around the corner at 4733 Great Northern Blvd.
The move was crucial for the business, Trayers said.
The old shop still hosted the same amount of equipment as it currently sells, but was a third of the size making it difficult for customers and staff alike, he said.
“As the opportunities for new space kept opening up, it just made sense to move now,” Trayers said. “It was 20 years overdue, and it was very cramped.”
The new building gives customers a lot more room to move around and shop comfortably, he said.
The move also has given the business a chance to expand into more equipment.
A whole section of the store now plays host to an eclectic collection of bikes for all ages.
The store caters to many sports from baseball and golf to hockey and softball to football and snowboarding.
One of its on-the-rise sports is the pandemic popular disc golf, a game combining aspects of golfing and frisbee into a game suited for all ages.
Still, the store isn’t just about selling sporting goods; it repairs and sometimes replaces them, too, Trayers said.
“We service what we sell,” he said. “We sharpen skates, mold skates, tune bikes up, … reshaft and regrip golf clubs, restring lacrosse heads, and much more.”
When customers walk through the doors, Play It Again Sports should offer to fix their equipment as well as sell it, Trayers said.
With the spring here, Play It Again Sports is looking forward to the business the busy sports season brings, he said.
“March to July is typically our busiest time of the year because baseball, softball and biking is kicking off,” Trayers said.
Play it Again Sports is prepared for this new business as the store’s staffing did not take a hit from the coronavirus pandemic, he said.
“We did not lose any staff during the pandemic,” Trayers said. “They all stuck with us.
“And in the used department, during a low economy or high inflation, people are always looking for a deal.”
