MANISTEE — Local students won’t have to look hard for ways to keep busy this summer thanks to an assortment of summer camp offerings from the Armory Youth Project in Manistee.
The camps are open to those who will be entering grades six through 12.
Executive director Amy Wojciechowski said the camp format is something new to the Armory.
“Last year we just had programs. We tried a few unique programs that ran over several weeks, but this year we decided that we wanted to have a more robust enrollment,” she said. “We saw that camps had been identified as very popular with kids during the summer, so we thought that we would take that approach this year.”
Wojciechowski said no student will leave the camps empty-handed.
“We’re trying to incorporate items that are takeaway swag for the kids, so that not only do they have the event and what they’ve learned from the event, but they’ll be able to leave with something they can remember the event with,” she said.
Disc golf camp
The Armory’s summer camp series will open with a three-day disc golf camp. Participants will learn tips and tricks from 10 a.m. to noon on June 15 and 16 on the Armory’s nine-hole course before putting their newfound knowledge to the test with a trip to West Shore Community College’s disc golf course from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 17.
Wojciechowski said the Armory has a qualified instructor for the camp in the form of Jason McLellen.
“He is a new Manistee resident, and he has not only experience in disc golf, but he’s played it professionally,” Wojciechowski said.
