GAYLORD, MI – A week after a devastating tornado struck, Gaylord is welcoming summer tourists with open arms.
The northern Michigan town that hugs I-75 is known for its outdoor recreation with 90 inland lakes, winding trails, more than a dozen golf courses and an elk herd. Gaylord’s downtown is also home to a collection of unique restaurants, breweries and shops.
Gaylord was gearing up for its busy summer tourism season when a rare tornado swept through town on May 20. It caused major damage to two Gaylord neighborhoods and hit a busy M-32 business district.
Two people were killed and dozens were injured.

Despite the blow to the tightknit community, Gaylord Area Convention and Tourism Bureau executive director Paul Beachnau says Gaylord is open for business.
“How people can support is to continue their trips,” he said. “Our economy needs to be successful. That is one thing that will help people that are affected.”
Here are 15 Gaylord spots you can visit this Memorial Day weekend and throughout the summer:
1. Call of the Wild, 850 S. Wisconsin Ave.
The Call of the Wild Museum, which can be seen from I-75, features over 60 wildlife displays in a variety of habitats. Right next door is Bavarian Falls Park where families can hop into a go-kart or play a round of putt putt golf.
2. Gaylord Elk Park, 116 Grandview Boulevard
The city of Gaylord maintains a herd of 40 elk on about 108 acres south of downtown. The public can view the 800-pound creatures from Elk View Park.
