Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – Over the weekend, disc golf players competed in three rounds for the Great Land Cup.

Shannon Crossley, the Communications Director for Juneau Disc Golf Club talked about the event.

“We are participating in the 16th annual Great Land cup. It is three rounds and it’s from different tee box locations so it gets a little bit harder and a little bit harder every round. We are doing two rounds Saturday. Then one and a half rounds tomorrow. And then this year because we have so many contestants, this is the biggest turnout we’ve ever had. We had to cap at 45 contestants to play the last nine holes. There’s about 65 contestants here from all over the state and we actually have some people from down south too.”

Crossley talked about refreshments available at the event.

“We have Alaskan Brewing Co. They donated some beer for our participants which is really nice of them. We’re doing this little fundraiser for the club. Also, we have Blumen Dogs over here setting up the hotdog stand which we’re really excited about.”

Crossley also talked about the history of hosting the tournament in Juneau.

“The Juneau Disc Golf club right now is only two years old but there have been people in the community that have tried to start up clubs. So this has been going on with different people running it every year. Some people run it for four years and then hand it off and it’s just been kind of underground for a really long time. But a lot of people from all over the state love coming to this one because there’s nowhere else really like Aant’iyeik. It’s always raining and they love it.”

Matt Stevens, a previous contestant and member of the club, talked about what went into organizing the distance run.

“The long-drive competition I organized, I wanted to find a way to put in a long-drive competition that everyone in the tournament felt comfortable entering. And I finally figured out I could group them by scores. So that I have first, through fourteenth, they’re in a group by themselves playing for the longest drive, and fifteenth through twenty-fourth is in a group by themselves playing for longest drive.
