Disc golf course among Buckwalter Rec Center master plan proposals

A disc golf course is one of several proposed additions to Buckwalter Recreation Center’s master plan.
Bluffton and Beaufort County are seeking town approval to amend the plan with the following changes:
• Reducing the number of new soccer fields at the center’s northern end from three to two.
• Removing plans for a sports pavilion near the existing soccer fields.
• Replacing three proposed baseball fields, a press box and concessions facilities with two new soccer fields.
• Adding a new maintenance building.
• Adding a disc golf course along Buckwalter Parkway, north of Barton’s Run Crossing.
Town Council will vote on the changes at a future meeting. The Bluffton Planning Commission recommended last month that council approve them.
The disc golf course would be the first in Bluffton, according to the app UDisc’s database of courses. Other Lowcountry courses include one at Hardeeville’s Sergeant Jasper Park, two on Hilton Head Island and one in Beaufort.
The Buckwalter course would be nine holes and include a shade pavilion, according to the proposed master plan.
Town documents said the soccer complex at the north end of the rec center currently has three soccer fields, a restroom building and a covered seated area. The existing master plan includes three more adjacent fields and a sports pavilion. The amended plan would reduce that to two new fields with a larger parking lot.
Officials are seeking to add soccer fields in place of a baseball complex south of the rec center’s indoor facility. The current master plan calls for three baseball fields and accompanying facilities. Under the amended plan, some of that land would be used for two soccer fields and a restroom building.
Buckwalter Recreation Center, located across from the Bluffton school complex on Buckwalter Parkway, is owned by the town and operated by the county. Formerly called Buckwalter Community Park, it currently includes a soccer complex, an outdoor skate park, and an indoor facility with a weight room, track, and basketball and racquetball courts.
The existing master plan includes a planned tennis center at the southern end of the property. The center’s layout would be reconfigured under the amended plan.
The tennis center would feature 16 lighted courts, shaded seating areas, an 8,000-square-foot building, an event lawn and 104 parking spaces. The other proposed parking lot at the soccer complex would add 231 spaces.
