Clanton will host the third annual Frozen Peach Championship on Jan. 28 at the Peach City Disc Golf Course. The C-tier event sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association is a one-day, two-round event with check in beginning at 7:15 a.m. A shotgun start will commence at 9 a.m. to get the event underway. Entry fees are $55 for adults and $50 for juniors. The event will feature raffle items and an ace pot that competitors can buy into.
“We are looking forward to another great event,” tournament director D.J. Hines said. “Obviously, you would want a little warmer weather for disc golf, but that is what makes it the Frozen Peach.”
Both of the previous Frozen Peach Championships filled up quickly and had a full event. Last year, the sign up was released just after Christmas, and the event was full by Jan. 2.
Hines said he is okay with being a smaller C-tier event, but “we still create that big experience.”
“We encourage people who are new to disc golf to come out and try it out,” Hines said. “I want as much new growth as I can get, so we do not become stagnant.”
Competitors will be given a Discraft player pack that includes a weekender bag that is new for the event. The weekender bag is a smaller bag that holds fewer discs for short tournaments. Hines said he wanted to give something “new and unique” to the competitors in this year’s pack.
After the start of the new year, Hines and assistant tournament director Brian Jones will begin reaching out to local businesses for sponsorships and raffle items.
“Those help towards the event and growing the course to do future events,” Hines said. “If anyone would like to get their name out there with sponsorships, or has a creative raffle idea … I would love to help with that, and more community involvement would be great.”
In 2023, Hines said he hopes to meet with some of the other municipalities around Chilton County to establish another disc golf course in the area.
