Active Heroes hosting community campout weekend to help end veteran suicide

Active Heroes is kicking off the summer with a community campout.The nonprofit is hosting a weekend campout for veterans and civilians at the retreat center in Shepherdsville.Liz Matley said this event helps veterans reenter society and form a community.”It promotes camaraderie and lets people come out and not have to think and plan and do, they can just kind of be and reconnect with each other and talk to other families who have had similar experiences,” said Matley.The 147-acre retreat center will be used for camping and outdoor activities.Veteran and military families can camp for free. For civilians, it’s $25 per day and $50 for the weekend, kids 7 and under are free. All meals and activities are included.Tents are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is parking for campers and RVs (no utilities).There will be campfires, hiking, games, horseback riding, disc golf, an 80s-themed karaoke contest, archery and more.The event runs from Friday at 4 p.m. through 10 a.m. Sunday.Active Heroes is a nonprofit charity working with U.S. military service members, veterans, and their families to prevent suicide. The 147-acre retreat center and ranch at 1022 Ridgeview Drive in Shepherdsville, Kentucky offers a variety of outdoor recreation activities and events to promote relaxation and healing. Hiking, archery, disc golf, and equine therapy programs are just some of the options provided. The center features two beautiful log cabins open to military families and an event pavilion available for rent and open to the community.
