Team Innova had an outstanding performance last weekend at the 2022 Great Lakes Open. Calvin Heimburg won his second Elite Series event of the season, beating Cory Ellis in a one hole playoff. Randon Latta finished in 15th, his best showing at an Elite Series event to date. And nine FPO players from Team Innova cracked the Top 20, with Ohn Scoggins and Emily Beach tying for second place. This continues a streak of exceptional results for Innova players in 2022 Pro Tour events.
This was the 40th annual Great Lakes Open, making DGLO one of the oldest tournaments in disc golf history. Calvin Heimburg joins a long list of legendary players to earn the DGLO title including Ken Climo, Barry Shultz, Ricky Wysocki, Paul Mcbeth, and over 20 other unique winners.
The Kensington Toboggan course in Milford, Michigan is known for its extreme elevation changes and challenging length. At 10,000+ feet, it is one of the longest courses on tour. Steep, uphill grades mean 500-foot holes can play like they are 800 feet. Sweeping, downhill fairways make for some of the most epic and fun shots in the sport. Though the course plays long, accuracy off the tee is just as important as distance. Tight woods and specific landing zones demand precisely thrown lines on every hole.
Last weekend, Calvin Heimburg was the player who best executed those lines. Though usually known for his consistency on the putting green, Heimburg won the 2022 Great Lakes Open with his drives. He led the event in parked percentage, birdie percentage, and circle one hits in regulation. Despite his unmatched throwing for the event, Heimburg had to fight to the finish. Cory Ellis was 100% inside the circle for the weekend, keeping him in close contention to the very end. The two players met in a playoff which ended on hole one. The stoic Calvin Heimburg let out a cheer and a smile that he reserves for big wins like this one.
This is Heimburg’s second Elite Series victory of the season. He won the 2022 Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open in a one hole playoff as well. This past weekend’s victory moved Calvin up to the top of the Pro Tour points standings for the year. Out of his eleven starts at Elite Series and Major events this season, he has made it onto the podium six times. Calvin Heimburg’s consistency is unrivaled in the MPO field.
