CHARLEVOIX — What began in 1930 as a candle lit boat parade in Charlevoix’s harbor has become an eight-day celebration of family and community pride.
With both national and local music acts performing in three waterfront parks, a Kids’ Day, a dozen athletic tournaments, two nights (Friday and Saturday) of world class fireworks and the acclaimed Venetian boat parade, there is something for everyone at this year’s Charlevoix Venetian Festival.
The 92nd annual Charlevoix Venetian Festival will run from July 16-23. This year, Charlevoix’s pre-eminent historian, David Miles, has been selected as Grand Marshall.
Events officially kick off on Saturday, July 16, with the popular Aquapalooza boating party, volleyball and the Venetian Court’s corn toss competition at Ferry Beach.
Sunday through Thursday (July 17-19) is host to a myriad of sporting events, including disc golf doubles, tennis, croquet, a sailing regatta and a 3-on-3 soccer tournament. The gaming continues throughout the week with a pickleball championship and footraces on Saturday morning, July 23.
On Wednesday, July 20, things start to pick up speed as the carnival starts, the tiki tent goes up and live music fills the air each night for the remainder of the week. Of particular note this year is the 38 Special concert on Thursday, July 21. In addition, Wednesday will see Miss Charlevoix crowned at 7 p.m. in the Odmark Pavilion. Thursday includes kids’ day, which is being held at Hungry Duck Farm of M-66 (a new location), and the Venetian classic car show.
For those attempting to drive through the center of the city during this time, keep in mind that Bridge Street will be closed to car traffic starting around 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, and ending after the fireworks end on Saturday, July 23, around 10:30 p.m.
The fun continues on Friday at dusk on Lake Charlevoix with the first of two firework shows. Saturday boasts the culmination of the week’s activities with a street parade at 11 a.m. following the Ryan Shay Mile championship race. Saturday’s fireworks begin immediately following a boat parade on Round Lake.
The Venetian Festival fireworks have garnered national acclaim, with the assistance of the downtown lake serving as “nature’s pyrotechnic amphitheater,” according to Festival Board President Dan Barron.
Complete festival event listings can be found in the printed festival booklets and flyers around town, as well as at www.venetianfestival.com.
