A trio of ski resorts presents a variety of terrain types while the lakeshore geography offers long sandy beaches. An hour’s drive north, North Lake Tahoe operates on “Tahoe time,” yielding a more laid-back experience. We sat down with her to learn more about the sport and how “going pro” works:

Q: How do professional disc golf players make money playing the sport?

A: Well, it’s really blown up a lot in the last few years, especially since COVID. There are people getting paid serious money to play professionally — like millions of dollars like the top players so it’s actually a lot bigger than people realize. But yeah, you get paid cash, if you’re on a professional level, and then you have sponsorships and every sponsorship is different depends on your level. You could be getting paid a salary in addition to disc sales and then you have your own merchandise that you can sell. So, there are a lot of people actually making a living out of it.

Q: What motivates you to keep playing?

A: I’ve actually kind of stepped back because of a lot of physical injuries. So, I’ve had to step back from competing just recently, but it’s just fun to go out there. I’ve made a lot of friends, and it’s just a really unique experience. Then I also had people who would follow me — friends and family and then just strangers — that would follow what I was doing. And that was always in the back of my mind. I also had sponsors. So, you have a lot of people you’re trying to play for. That probably kept me going longer than maybe I would help otherwise.

Q: What kind of growth have you seen in disc golf community in Southeast Texas?

A: In this area, it’s been crazy, especially since COVID when people wanted something to do outdoors, and it’s cheap — anybody can go play. There’s no course fees at like 90% of courses, and you can just go play whenever you want. And then for $50, you can get all the discs you need to start with and then just spend your days playing disc golf.

We’ve been adding courses, and the cities are putting more money into the courses to fix them up to attract people to play. Now there’s a course in Lumberton, there’s a couple in like Orange and Vidor there. Scotty just fixed up Pleasure…

Opened in 2014, El Cardonal is the first golf course designed by 82-time PGA TOUR winner Tiger Woods and TGR Design.

PELHAM– The 2023 State of our Communities luncheon was held at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena with presentations given by the mayors of Shelby County on what can be expected within the county in the upcoming year.

Alabaster Mayor Scott Brakefield, elected in 2020, spoke first in the presentation and provided updates on what can be expected in Alabaster in the coming year.

In 2022, the city of Alabaster broke ground on Patriots Park as well as took place in a park’s needs assessment in 2019.

“We purchased some property from Kingwood Church and were able to break ground in 2022,” Brakefield said. “That should open within the next month or month-and-a-half.”

Brakefield shared that construction has begun on Highway 119 as part of the first phase of expansion for the widening project as well as progress on Highway 31 improvements.

“I want to thank the members of our community and city who are responsible for day-to-day operations,” Brakefield said. “I can’t thank them enough.”

New pavilions and restrooms are now available at Veterans Park in Alabaster as part of a partnership with the county.

“Veterans Park was an expansion last year where we brought additional parking and expansion of our trails,” Brakefield said. “We also are working with the county to begin some construction on county roads and intersections within our city. “

Mayor Jon Graham was present representing the city of Calera offered updates on what’s to come for the city.

“Life is good in Calera,” Graham said. “We are continuing to grow with our residential sales and new home construction permits are up by 133 this year. Our market values seem to be holding our own.”

Graham said the city hopes to see I-65 widened from Alabaster to the Highway 31 exit in Calera in the near future.

New businesses have been opened in Calera, and the city is partaking in downtown revitalization efforts.

“We have purchased different pieces of real estate downtown,” Graham said. “We have a few more pieces to go. Be on the lookout for what’s going on in downtown Calera. We have a new Dynamic Discs downtown.”

1. Disc Golf

Bethel’s beautiful 247-acre campus features one of the top disc golf courses in the country. Ranked #3 nationwide by UDisc—the official app of the Professional Disc Golf Association—Bethel’s free disc golf course offers 18 holes across campus. Largely on the north side of campus, the course begins near Chalberg Hall and crosses through a wooded area along Lake Valentine. This gives the course a unique layout with a bit of everything: several elevation changes, water hazards, tight wooded lines, park-style golf, and out-of-bounds-lined fairways. Some students even take a disc golf course for academic credit!

2. Rent Board Games from the Library

The Bethel Library has everything from downloadable eBooks to a DVD collection that rivals any remaining Blockbuster. Students can stave off seasonal affective disorder by renting a SAD lamp or checking out the latest young adult fantasy series gripping social media. And, to spice up any residence hall party, roommate movie night, or get-to-know-you club event, students can rent a variety of board games from the Bethel Library. It’s really a win-win-win.

3. Hammock

If one were to visit Bethel on a balmy, sunny day (at least 40 degrees), odds are they’d find students lounging in hammocks. Whether they’re chatting with pals, doing homework, reading for fun, or snoozing—Royals try to chase the warmer weather as much as they can. There are numerous places across Bethel’s 247 acres to hammock—on The Hill, near the dock, on the Russell W. Johnson Nature Trail, Sem Hill, and more! So grab your gear, wear your shades, and get outside.
