How to Play Disc Golf In Calgary
, 2022-06-16 08:00:53,
Disc golf is an easy and affordable game that keeps growing in popularity. Here are a few things to know before heading out to try it for yourself.
There are tons of great ways to spend time outside in Calgary during the summer — and one of them is disc golf. Also known as frisbee golf, or “frolf,” disc golf is fun, budget-friendly and relatively easy to play, and the city boasts plenty of beautiful courses where you can give the sport a try.
Here are a few things to know before getting started.
How to Play Disc Golf
In disc golf, the object is to throw a disc from a concrete tee pad and sink it into an elevated metal basket in as few throws as possible. Most courses in the city consist of either nine or 18 “holes,” each with a set par. Holes range in distance from 100 metres to more than 400 m.
Often, experienced players will have a variety of discs they use for different types of shots, such as putting or driving. But more casual players can play the game with just one disc.
Unlike at a regular golf course, there are no tee times for disc golf — you can just show up with a disc to play, but remember to be respectful of those ahead of you and wait for them to clear the way before you start throwing. A full list of rules can be found on the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) website.
Where to Play Disc Golf in Calgary
There are currently three permanent City-run courses, open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.: Baker Park, Forest Lawn and David Richardson Memorial Disc Golf Park (the latter is closed for now due to ongoing course restoration work). A fourth permanent course, called Currie Reservoir, is run by the Calgary Disc Golf Club…

Massive alligator charges at man at Florida park

WATCH: Massive alligator charges at man at Florida park

LARGO, Fla. – A Florida man says a large alligator lunged out of the water and charged at him while visiting the same park where a man recently died in the lake inhabited by gators.
Foster Thorbjornsen told FOX 35 News he was walking at John S. Taylor Park in Largo this week and noticed an 8 to 10-foot alligator in the lake about 20-feet from shore.
“He was the biggest alligator I have seen in the wild,” Thorbjornsen wrote on Facebook.
He stopped to take some close-up photos of the gator using his zoom lens, but when he looked away to check his camera, Thorbjornsen says the alligator “quickly swam to shore and charged at me,” stopping when the gator was almost completely out of the water about 10-feet away.
“The timing of his charge was deliberate. He waited for me to turn and look away. It was nerve wracking and intense,” Thorbjornsen continued on Facebook. “But, Florida being a stand your ground state (lol), I took only a step or two back before quickly taking more shaky videos and pictures.”

Thorbjornsen said he wasn’t too worried about himself since there was a steep embankment and a tree between him and the gator, but then remembered that a man was recently found dead in a lake with alligators while looking for golf discs.
“This is a park frequented by families with small children who often go to the water’s edge. Definitely not the ideal place for a large, aggressive, territorial bull gator.”
Sean McGuinness, 47, was found May 31 in the lake in Taylor…

The Disc Golf Pro Tour Is Coming to Colorado for the First Time. Here’s How to Watch
, 2022-06-14 17:20:47,
For anyone who still thinks disc golf is just a pastime for stoned college kids, the $10,000 purse up for grabs in both the men’s and women’s divisions of this weekend’s Match Play Championship in Bailey should shatter that illusion. Over the past few years, the sport has exploded, both at the recreational level and among professionals, the best of whom are signing multiyear, multimillion-dollar contracts with corporate sponsors.
Starting on Thursday, June 16, Coloradans will have an unprecedented opportunity to watch 32 of the top disc golfers in the world rattle chains in our backyard—specifically, at the BOERA (Bailey Outdoor Education and Recreation Area) disc golf course, less than an hour southwest of Denver on U.S. 285. Normally 21 holes, the mountainous course has been altered to create a special 12-hole layout designed to challenge the pros as they contend with the terrain and how discs fly in the thinner air at 8,310 feet.
Part of the 2022 Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT), the invite-only event is smaller in scale than most of the season’s tournaments, which can see 150-some players. “It is a very elite field, kind of small and intimate, which is pretty cool,” says Bailey resident Dan McKercher, who works as the DGPT’s operations and partnerships manager and is also the vice president of the Foothill Flyers Disc Golf Club. We asked McKercher to help us put together this spectator’s guide (the match will also be livestreamed on the Disc Golf Network) to Colorado’s first DGPT competition.
The Format
Unlike a normal round—in which players’ throws to reach each basket get added up and the lowest score wins, à la traditional golf—match play pits two players against each other on every hole. For this tournament, if you win the hole, you…

Four things to know about Pender County town projects
, 2022-06-14 05:03:14,
For several months, town officials throughout Pender County were busy crunching budget numbers for operations.
The plans also include several projects and upgrades for residents and employees for the next fiscal year, starting July 1 and ending June 30, 2023. Budget ordinances are required by statute that sets the spending limits for municipalities.
The following are some of the projects town leaders made a priority.
Topsail Beach eyes emergency center
Topsail Beach began looking over totals in December with input from department leaders for a budget totaling more than $8.2 million.
After several meetings, one of the decisions included plans for a new fire station and a emergency operations center on Topsail Island. Funds will be spent on architectural, design, and construction plans for the facility.

Town manager Mike Rose reported the town’s mainland center is critical for situations such as evacuations.
“But we also want a facility on the island that we can use either if we don’t have to evacuate or certainly be functional as quick as staff can get back on the island, so you can start that recovery process,” Rose said.
The town applied for about $400,000 in grant money to help pay for architectural and design services through federal funding. Rose added that he was also happy that the plans were also on a list of plans getting attention from Rep. David Rouzer though the Emergency Operations Center Grants program.
“While that doesn’t guarantee that we’re getting it, we have moved to the next level,” Rose said. “And that’s good news.”
The town expects to hear more about grant approval in September.
According to the budget, 31.8% of general fund…

Florida man found dead in gator-filled lake while searching for Frisbees news
, 2022-06-12 08:50:57,
A man died searching for Frisbees in a lake at a disc golf course the place individuals are warned by indicators to watch out for alligators, police in Florida mentioned Tuesday.
The unidentified man was trying for flying discs in the water and “a gator was involved,” the Largo Police Department mentioned in an e mail Tuesday. Emergency crews say it occurred at John S. Taylor Park.
The man who died was 47 years outdated, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission mentioned in an e mail. The fee mentioned a contracted specialist was working to take away an alligator from the lake “and efforts will be made to determine if it was involved in this situation.”
The park’s website notes that patrons can “discover the sport of disc golf on a course set in the natural beauty of this park.” The course is ready alongside the lake, which has no-swimming indicators posted alongside it.
People who frequent the disc course mentioned it is commonplace for somebody to look for misplaced discs that may be bought for a couple of dollars.
“These are people that are down on their luck,” Ken Hostnick, 56, advised the Tampa Bay Times. “Sometimes they dive in the lakes, they’ll pull out 40 discs. You may sell them for five bucks a piece, and you may sell them for 10 bucks a piece, depending on the quality.”
Now, police are telling folks to keep away from the lake while the investigation continues.
