Gifford Pinchot State Park offers camping, boating, fishing, hiking

In traveling around Pennsylvania, I enjoy exploring the different state parks. There’s something special about walking to the water while enjoying the aroma of a burger cooking on a charcoal barbecue.
My latest adventure led me to Gifford Pinchot State Park near Lewisberry in northern York County.
The park is named in honor of former Gov. Gifford Pinchot. In 1930, he is credited with setting up work camps across the state that became the model for the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Today, the park and its 340-acre Pinchot Lake is known as a recreational attraction for the region.

Jen Green, park resource ranger, is in her 17th season working at the park, and she has fond memories of visiting the park as a child during a field trip in school.
“One year, the bus was broken down and we were sitting on the bus waiting for another bus to come pick us up and I saw all these hunting signs posted along the side and I remember, I don’t know why it sticks out in my brain, but I remember thinking wow that’s a lot of signs. I bet somebody there, their exclusive job must be signs,” she said. “Little did I know that’s not the case and it would one day be my job.”
She likes the park and spending time with visitors and campers. “I always enjoyed nature,” she said about her work.
Pinchot Lake
Pinchot Lake is a recreational lake that has two peninsulas that are popular places for people to relax and fish.
The lake is fed by Beaver Creek, which is stocked with trout. But the lake itself is a warm-water fishery with species like bass, perch and panfish.
