God will smooth out the path ahead

My husband plays quite a bit of disc golf. Sometimes I play too, but in his tournaments, I simply walk with him.
Inevitably, at least part of the course has tall grass, which is terrible for someone terrified of snakes. Since I can’t do my high-knees-run-back-to-the-house that I do at my parents’ lake house when it’s dark, I have to simply pretend I’m not afraid and walk like normal.
So instead, I follow my husband — footstep for footstep. As he makes an indention in the grass and nothing crawls over it, I step right inside. I stare at the ground and do this until we’re out of the tall grass and I can see what’s ahead of me for myself.
Maybe that’s why God puts “tall grass” in our lives sometimes. Maybe He’s asking us to follow in His footsteps, to follow His lead. In order to walk along the path, clear of itchy tall grass and crawling critters, we have to trust He is going ahead of us. We have to watch Him closely and follow where He leads.
Deuteronomy 31:8 says “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
It’s a trusting process — that if He clears the way then it’s prepared for you, that His plans are for your good.
But there is a downside of following in my husband’s literal footsteps. I’m so focused on the ground, I’m not paying any attention to where we’re going or what’s around me.
Some of the courses He plays have beautiful scenery, but I miss half of it because I’m staring at the ground the whole time. I’m doing what I can to make sure…
