Legacy Farms Disc Golf is, unquestionably, off the beaten path. The course, which opened last summer, is on a narrow, unassuming side road in this Waldo County town.

But, the sign on Fisher Road, says it all: “Throw with us, grow with us.”

That is exactly what owners Henry and Patti Grover hope to accomplish with their latest endeavor. And hope the “legacy” of the course grows with the ever-growing interest in the sport.

Henry said he and his wife discovered disc golf a few years ago while they owned a campground in Richmond.

“Folks were coming to stay with us to play the courses in the area,” he said. “We discovered there were 20-plus courses within 20 miles of our campground. The closest was Acker’s Akers [in Bowdoinham] just three miles away.”

They quickly were hooked on the sport as “the disc golf community is welcoming.”

“We played a few times in Maine and much more when we wintered in Florida after the campground closed for the season,” he said. “It became a great way for us to get outside, meet people all over the place and explore new areas.”

The couple made the decision to sell their campground to get closer to family in the Bangor area and settled in Winterport in the fall of 2018.

“We have 25 acres with long frontage on Marsh stream,” Henry said. ‘Towering pines and maples and old farm fields lined with old apple trees.”

The concept for the course began in the fall of 2018 with work beginning the following spring.

The duo began work on their new course last spring. Excavators were brought in to clear land and help install the driveway, while a pro shop also was built to house disc rentals and the purchase of new discs and apparel from the largest disc golf manufacturers such as Innova, Discraft and Westside Discs, among others.

By late summer, the course had a “soft open” of their front nine holes. Henry said the clubhouse is fully stocked and “we expect the back nine to be playable by June.”

“We were actually very well-received by the local community,” said Patti. “Especially [local] disc golfers who were used to having to travel 30 to 60 minutes to play a round. We’ve also had quite a few new players of all ages that we have introduced to the sport.”

She added that, “We would love to have conversations with the schools and recreation departments about setting up an official program.”
