🚨 One thing to know today

A Johnson County judge this week sentenced Dvonte Jamal Brown, 31, to life in prison for first degree murder in connection to a deadly 2020 shooting in Overland Park.

Brown will not have a chance at parole for at least 25 years.

He was also sentenced to nearly five years in prison for attempted second degree murder. The sentences will run concurrently.

In January, a jury found Brown guilty for the killing of Micah Babick, 30, who was found shot to death in a McDonald’s parking lot near the Johnson County Central Resource Library on 87th Street in April 2020.

Brown was taken into custody and charged a few days after the shooting.

About two months later, Babick’s younger brother, Roman Babick, was arrested and also charged with first degree murder in his brother’s killing.

Police at the time said Roman Babick went to the McDonald’s near the library with his brother and witnessed his brother’s murder.

Johnson County court records indicate Roman Babick, now 20, is currently scheduled to face a jury trial in August.
