The first of three disc golf courses in various stages of development around Grant County is set to hold its grand opening Saturday. The course is located at the end of Newsham Road, on the historic site of the Hearst Mill along Pinos Altos Creek, near Silver City’s Cherry Hills neighborhood.
While the new course has an official address, online maps are not so far proving very accurate with driving directions to it. Course developers suggest accessing the course by turning onto Newsham Road from Pinos Altos Road — the street that runs behind R&L Service Center. The end of Newsham turns to dirt, and there is a parking area available.
According to a flyer for the event, the grand opening will include prizes and raffles. The recently formed Silver City Disc Golf Club will be on hand to sign up new members and provide plenty of people to answer questions about the sport. There is a sand pit, and there will be some water play available for kids. In addition, the Mint Chip’s mobile unit will be there to sell ice cream on what looks to be a bright, sunny day.
Jeff and Alicia Cramm, the driving force behind the advocacy, design and construction of the course, organized a workday two weeks ago to get it ready for its big opening. About 20 volunteers worked to trim weeds, pick up trash, build tee boxes and set baskets and signposts at each hole.
“Silver City finally has baskets,” Jeff said after the last of the baskets was set and the remaining group played the first-ever practice round on the new course.
He threw first on Hole One, and the first birdies, pars and bogeys were all recorded by the volunteer group as the sun moved behind the cottonwood trees.
