New pickleball, disc golf, soccer park planned for former Swansea farm

SWANSEA – The journey to turn the town-owned 22-acre Medeiros Farm on Bark Street into an active recreation site is moving right along.
Purchased by the town with Community Preservation Act funding in 2021, the property has since been used for little besides training by the fire and police departments. But in December, the the town began working with BETA Group Inc. to create a site plan. On Feb. 28, BETA’s Nate Socha, the project manager, presented a 50 percent design plan at the town’s Board of Selectmen meeting.
The presentation was well received. The project team – also including Town Administrator Mallory Aronstein, Town Planner John Hansen, Assistant Highway Director Scott Olobri, Parks Superintendent Matthew Beane, and BETA Principal Randall Collins – is soliciting public input before reconvening for its yet-to-be scheduled 75 percent design plan meeting.
What the new park will include
Key features of the 50 percent plan include 8 acres of soccer fields, 300 to 400 parking spaces and room for overflow parking, walking trails/disc golf course running the one mile site perimeter, a pavilion/rest rooms building, a bandstand, five tennis courts, a 6,500- to 7,500-square-foot playground (with GaGa Ball pit, which is a form of dodgeball), and a skate park.
The Swansea-Somerset Youth Soccer League would pay for that part of the project construction and lease the land from the town. While the SSYSL games and practices would take priority for field use, the fields would also be available to the public.

Aronstein said she is excited about the progress of the Medeiros Farm site plan “because I’m so thankful for the opportunity to create some fun space for the town.”
She sad she envisions the completed active recreation site as not only serving the community but being a key component in a town “Destination Swansea” tourism promotion. She cited the town’s two golf courses, its farms, its farm stands, its ice cream shops, and more.
How much will the Medeiros Farm transformation cost?
Neither Hansen nor Aronstein were ready to put a price tag on a multi-millon-dollar project which has not been finalized. Town…
