Places to hike in Gaston County this fall

And once again, Labor Day weekend has arrived.
The calendar and the almanac say the end of summer is still more than two weeks away. Don’t believe them.
The days have already grown noticeably shorter, high school football stadiums shine like polished diamonds on Friday nights, and a few maples are already showing the first vague hints of yellow and red in their upper branches.
Soon, the days will join the nights in being distinctly cooler and even the most sedentary among us will feel the urge to get up, to get out, to walk in the woods, and to breathe in air freshened by the changing seasons.

As I stood on the bridge and looked back across the lake, an enormous great blue heron came gliding along, no more than a foot above the water’s surface. Wow!
Kings Mountain Gateway Trail
Whether you have a full day to spend walking or just half an hour, Kings Mountain’s Gateway Trail system, located at 807 S. Battleground Ave., has an option to suit both your time and your fitness level.
And, due to the close proximity and easy accessibility to Kings Mountain’s downtown, you can even begin your walk with lunch or breakfast before strolling down a sidewalk to the trailhead.
The Gateway Trail is actually four separate trails, with three other…
