Questioning the Locals: Tal Morgan
A walking contradiction is what Morgan Music owner, Tal Morgan, claims to be. Raised in Eau Claire and into the family business, Tal is a self-proclaimed “support local warrior.” When he’s not with his wife and cats or in Morgan Music, Tal can be found playing disc golf, chess, reading, hiking, backpacking, and enjoying a nice cup of joe. He hopes to be a resource not only for musicians but for other small businesses as well.
*What aspect(s) of Morgan Music are you most proud of?
I’m super proud of our family history of commitment to our community and charitable works within our local community.
*What aspect(s) of Morgan Music would you like to see improved upon?
We aim to do 1% better every day, from a service perspective as well as a product perspective. Currently, we’re focusing on growing our Ecommerce division even more.
*What made you want to take over the family business?
It’s been a lifelong dream, honestly. I’m of course passionate about music gear and working with our guests and friends – but also have always wanted to continue the work of my father, uncles, and grandpa.
*What place in town considers you a “regular”?
Hopefully nowhere! I’m a bit of an under-the-radar person. But I do enjoy The Mousetrap and The Livery. I’ve also been to the Pablo a lot recently.
*What frustrates you about the Chippewa Valley?
I’m quite content with the valley, honestly. If anything, I occasionally fear that we’re losing our localized identity and diversity – but then a new local shop or restaurant opens that highlights our people, and I’m instantly re-energized.
*What is one of the best cultural experiences you’ve ever had in the Chippewa Valley?
I guess I couldn’t reduce it to a single experience, but generally appreciate the whole experience of the valley.
*What’s your favorite local festival?
They’re all awesome, and add a different flavor to the scene.
*What is your favorite piece of local trivia?
Perhaps more history than trivia, but I genuinely love the history of the peaceful gatherings at the confluence.
*Death bed, one meal from a local restaurant, what would it be?
Pretty much anything from Eau Claire Cheese & Deli! I cannot say enough good things about that shop.
*Water Street or Downtown?
Depends on the day and mood – but usually downtown.
*South side or North side?
I’ve lived in and loved pretty much every neighborhood in town. So, both!
*What book, TV show, or movie would you recommend to the members of city council?
I pretty much recommend everyone read “meditations” by Marcus Aurelius at least once in their life.
*What sort of economic development would you like to see in our area?
We already do a pretty good job of this; but I’d love to see even more focus on synergy-led initiatives and opportunities for small shops and start ups.
*What part of town have you never visited (and why)?
I’ve walked, hiked, climbed, biked, or drove through probably every inch of this beautiful city. Seriously, we have a park in the middle of a lake in the middle of town. Is this not paradise?
*If you could rename Eau Claire with a different French name, what would it be?
Amitie, which I believe translates to friendship. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen neighbors helping neighbors and even strangers helping strangers here… well… suffice it to say this community is built on some kind of spirit of friendship.
*What aspect(s) of Morgan Music are you most proud of?
I’m super proud of our family history of commitment to our community and charitable works within our local community. I’m also proud of our entire staff here at the shop. From our guest reps, teachers and techs – They’re some of the most passionate, creative, and hardworking people I’ve worked with. It’s been extremely fun to just grow with them as a shop and person.
*What are three local places/businesses/things you want to shoutout that you’re a big fan of or frequent?
I’ve already mentioned a few, but can I sneak a few more in? We have a lot of great places! The Plus, Revival Records, and Tangled up in Hue. All run by awesome people and just great places to be.
