A portion of Jim Ed Rice Parkway at the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center will be temporarily closed to thru traffic starting Jan. 30. “The purpose of the project is to actually create safe access across this thru road to be able to tie into the Trails Disc Golf Course,” said Matt Schell, Parks Department manager for Anderson County.According to Schell, crews will be installing a new crosswalk. “We’re going to do about a 10-foot wide crosswalk right there but behind it is going to be a larger, circular area where we’re going to have trailhead signage, benches, things of that sort so we’re just sort of making it bigger, making it safer and kind of recognizing the entrance to the Trails Disc Golf Course,” Schell said. During construction, Schell says only a small stretch of the road will be closed to thru traffic. “They need to close the access from this parking lot and about 100 feet forward for about two weeks,” Schell said. Schell said this work is part of the East-West Parkway trail extension. According to the county, it will go from the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center to AnMed North Campus once it is complete. “These extensions just allow for multi-modes of outdoor recreation, whether its bicycles or trails, its designated shared use path,” Schell said. “So it’s connecting people with the larger components that draw people through the county.” During construction, Schell said all of the amenities at the sports complex will remain open including the tennis courts, disc golf course and KidVenture 2.0. The road is expected to be closed to thru traffic from Jan. 30 to Feb. 13.
