Franklin County Industrial Development Corporation honors businesses, community members with awards | Local News
, 2022-11-14 15:00:00,
ST. ALBANS CITY — Local change-makers were honored Thursday night at the Franklin County Industrial Development Corporation’s annual meeting.
In the Bliss Room of the Saint Albans Museum, local leaders and the FCIDC board gathered Nov. 10 to network, socialize and give out three awards to outstanding community members.
FCIDC executive director Tim Smith served as emcee, joking with the crowd and introducing the three recipients: Handy Cars, Med Associates, LLC and Jim Cameron.
In the past, the annual reception has had a guest speaker on its agenda, but Smith said this year FCIDC opted to give the awardees more time to share their own stories.
“Do we need a speaker? What more of a message can a speaker give us than what Jim shared, what Valdemar shared, what Adam shared; that’s the message that makes Franklin County a great place to live,” Smith said.
Rick Manahan Civic Involvement Award
The Rick Manahan Civic Involvement Award was presented to Handy Cars. Created in 2010, this was the first time the honor was bestowed upon a business and its employees rather than a single person.
Each year, the recipient is selected by the Franklin Grand Isle Workforce Investment Board, which provides funds to area schools for the implementation of school-based learning strategies and professional development opportunities.
Handy Cars has been in business for 70 years and has included three generations of family leadership. The business was chosen for its collaboration with area schools to provide technical education to students through internships, co-ops and scholarships.
Cold Hollow Career Center director Nate Demars, one of the award’s presenters, said the tech center’s automotive technology program is one of its most popular, thanks in part to the school’s partnership with local businesses like Handy’s.
“When we can send our students out in the real world, where they’ll do real work with real experts in the field, it’s a win-win relationship,” Demars said.
Corey Jankowski, a senior in Northwest Career and Technical Center’s automotive program, is currently an intern in Handy Toyota’s main office and financial services department. He told the audience the staff is patient, makes him feel welcome and has inspired him to pursue a career at a dealership after graduation.
“Handy’s operates with a sense of constantly…

A wide range of topics in this week’s ’Bag: teal pumpkins, a Tuscola hotel, disc golf, a new use for an old school, new development on the edge of downtown Champaign, and future plans for the state’s fire academy that’s located just north of Windsor Road.
And, as usual, plenty of questions about area roadways: what it would take to extend Florida Avenue, how to request a new stop sign, whether cameras can be used to deter red-light runners, towing abandoned cars, whether it’s OK to cross a solid white line to get to a turn lane, and more.
Police escorts for team buses
“Police shut down Kirby at Prospect on a Friday night so buses carrying what sure looked like the Illini football team could make it to the Champaign Country Club for dinner without any delays. Is there some compelling reason to do that when our police departments are so short-staffed?”
Team escorts are provided by the UI Police Department. UIPD assistant chief Joe McCullough said, “As a university police department, it’s common for us to escort athletic teams, high-profile speakers, foreign dignitaries, politicians and other visitors who attract a lot of attention when they come to campus. Unlike full road closures, escorts only tie up an intersection for a few seconds, and it is the safest way to get them to…

Vergennes Phys Ed Teacher Named Vermont Teacher of the Year | Education | Seven Days
, 2022-09-29 20:08:03,
Hundreds of students gathered in the Vergennes Union Elementary School gym on Thursday afternoon for their first big assembly since before the pandemic.
A press release from the Agency of Education outlined some of Newton’s accomplishments over the course of her long career. In 2008, she secured a grant of almost $1 million for the school to create three ropes courses and purchase sports equipment such as snowshoes, ice skates, disc golf equipment and elliptical trainers. She developed curriculum centered around the Olympics to teach students about sportsmanship and world affairs. And she started a program based on brain research to help kindergarteners develop their motor skills. She’s also active in the local community as a member of the Vergennes Parks & Recreation committee, where she led a project to renovate the community’s ice rink and basketball facility.
They had good reason to get together: Robyn Newton, a physical education teacher at the school for 27 years, was recognized as the 2023 Vermont Teacher of the Year.
The Vermont Agency of Education has been honoring outstanding educators with the award since 1964. During Newton’s tenure as the title-holder, which begins on January 1, she’ll travel the state as an advocate for education and will be Vermont’s candidate for National Teacher of the Year.

“She’s a teacher who believes that learning can take place anywhere — in the classroom, in this gym, on the playing field and out in the community,” Education Secretary Dan French said in a short speech before bestowing the award. When French finally said Newton’s name, the gym erupted — with students clapping, jumping up and down, and even throwing their hats in the air.
“I’m as excited as you are,” French told them.

Tucson City Council to consider hiring 206 more staffers; COVID dollars keep flowing
, 2022-08-07 22:52:38,
Posted Aug 7, 2022, 1:13 pm
The budget process is over now that the deadlines have passed and spending plans have been set.
Or so we thought.
During a Tuesday study session, the Tucson City Council is expected to discuss $82 million in “supplemental” spending to go along with the nearly $2 billion budget approved in June. It’s meant to hire 206 new city employees.
This was always the plan.
City Manager Mike Ortega told department heads to move along two budget tracks. Phase one was putting out a standard-issue budget based on the last fiscal year.
Phase two was for the city to identify a bunch of new spending priorities for fiscal year 2022-23. Mission accomplished. Here comes new spending in the high eight figures. The bulk of it will be devoted to hiring new workers.
Notice I didn’t type “additional spending.” The money will be paid for from accounts within the city’s existing finances. So the city’s budget limit approved in June still stands. Even contingency funds are legally budgeted money and therefore part of the city’s overall spending capacity.
If the Council approves the move, the City Attorney’s Office would get four new staffers to work on domestic violence cases. Environmental Services would get new crews to clean up homeless camps. Tucson police are asking for 82 new officers and Ortega is recommending an equivalent of 50. The Human Resources Department is filling what it calls a “temp work force.” How the hell is a union-supported Council is going to approve that?
That’s the idea.
This feels sneaky, even though it’s what passes for on the level from an accounting standpoint.
I can see where Ortega would want to tell city departments, “OK, give me the budget you know we can afford year over year. Next, give me your wish list now that we are flush with extra cash and coming out of a pandemic.” There’s some strategic utility – I guess – in keeping those two processes separate.
It still feels sneaky. Just include it concurrently with the budget.
Gentle aside: For more proof that the U.S. is not in a recession, the city is going on a hiring spree. If this were an actual recession, the city would be cutting 200 workers who would be competing with umpteen dozen laid off call-center workers for the one job opening at Walmart. The job would go to a cashier’s idiot cousin.
This is another way of saying: “Boy do I wish this were my recession. Cuz my recession suuuuuccckkkkked.”
Yes, I get that…

CEG ranks Warren County second in business formation activity | Local
, 2022-07-23 17:00:00,
Warren County ranked second only to Albany County in annual business formation growth, according to the Center for Economic Growth.
An analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data recently published by CEG shows that 13,743 businesses in the eight-county Capital Region filed for an Employer Identification Number with the International Revenue Service in 2021.
That is a 45% year-to-year increase.
EDC Warren County believes that the county’s growth can, partially, be attributed to the increased desire to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life. This has been coveted since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
John Wheatley, vice president of EDC Warren County, said in a news release that the balance is not possible if businesses and the people who work for them don’t have broadband access.
