This weekend’s Trigg County Classic, the first tournament at the Trigg County Disc Golf Course, is kicking off with a full slate of players.

Organizers said the event has attracted almost 90 players from Trigg County and elsewhere in the state as well as from four other states — Missouri and Tennessee among them.

“It is a beautiful 18-hole layout,” said Mike Wright, chairman of the Cadiz-Trigg County Parks and Recreation Board, noting that the disc golf course is one of the prettiest in Kentucky.

It opened officially last November and has seen plenty of players in ensuing months.

Saturday’s tournament will be ushered in with a ribbon-cutting at 8:30 a.m. at the Trigg County Recreation Complex on Complex Road.

The first round begins at 9 a.m., and the second round starts at around 1 p.m.

Hawgs & Dawgs Barbeque food truck will be on hand for the inaugural tournament.

Designer Shawn Groton noted that it took more than a year to bring the course to fruition.

“We definitely encourage everybody to come out and try it out,” said Groton, who owns the Nashville Disc Golf Store in Nashville, Tennessee, and designed and installed the new golf course that starts at the baseball facility at the back of the local recreation complex.

He also marked it for clearing, contracting with John Oliphant to do that job; Groton notes that Oliphant’s crew did an exceptional job and were instrumental “in making the course come to life.”

The 18-hole course opens near some mature trees and includes some wooded technical holes. It features elevation throughout the 15 to 20 acres over which the course stretches.

The course boasts concrete tee pads, informational signs throughout the course and a playing area that is 60% woods and 40% through the fields.

Groton notes that the new Cadiz course is among 10,000 public disc golf courses in the United States and numerous private ones.

The sport has gained popularity because anyone from young children to elderly adults can play the game, according to Groton.

Families can play it together for fun, and professionals can play it. The Disc Golf Pro Tour just finished this past weekend in Austin, Texas.

Play is free in disc golf, Groton notes, and there is no tee time like with regular golf.

The game is played much like traditional golf except that players use a disc instead of a club.
