Fore! Greeley foundation chipping away at introducing golf to local youth
, 2023-05-20 07:00:49,
Students at three Greeley-Evans schools this year were introduced to golf in physical education classes, and there is a chance the program used by the K-8 students could expand to the city of Greeley for junior players.
This spring, and including the final days of the school year, students at S. Christa McAuliffe S.T.E.M. Academy, Tointon Academy of Pre-Engineering and Winograd K-8 School learned about golf in school using a beginner instruction kit from SNAG Golf.
SNAG, Starting New At Golf, is a program to teach golf to people of all ages and ability levels, according to the website of the Oklahoma-based company. The SNAG kits, containing clubs, brightly colored balls resembling a tennis ball but smaller, and devices to teach the swing, are also portable, allowing for use in a school gym or outside.
“It introduces them to an activity or sport they may not do in their own lives,” said John Paxton, a longtime McAuliffe physical education teacher who’s played golf for about 40 years. “It gives the kids an opportunity to learn the game of golf using things to help them be successful early.”
SNAG swung into District 6 through the advocacy of Greeley residents John and Amy Lee in memory of their son, Michael, who was an accomplished scholastic, collegiate and state-level amateur golfer.
Mike Lee died in December 2020 at age 28 from complications of COVID-19.
A 2010 Greeley Central graduate, Lee played for the Wildcats and went on to compete for Division II Colorado School of Mines. At Mines, he was a team captain, a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year and a Division II honorable mention All-American selection.
Through the Michael Ray Lee Foundation established by family and friends more than two years ago, the Lees donated $10,500 to District 6 to purchase three SNAG kits. Each kit costs $3,500.
John and Amy Lee said they recently heard from coaches about a dearth of youth golfers in Greeley. The Lees then thought about how they could introduce the game to kids, who might one day have an interest in playing high school golf.
They took their idea to District 6 leaders including Superintendent Deirdre Pilch, high school golf coaches and Bill Fearn, curriculum coordinator for secondary education and K-12 specials.
Fearn said in an email an important component of physical education is to encourage students to be “lifelong movers.”
“Since golf is a sport that people can play at any age, it was a natural fit for…

Gannon Buhr, 17, is an Iowa high schooler and disc golf superstar
, 2022-12-28 02:00:00,
The sun was starting to set on a warm November day as Gannon Buhr walked off the disc golf course at Waterford Park in Urbandale, Iowa. He stops when a man walking a dog notices him.
“Great season this year,” the man yells to Buhr, who was out trying some new discs.
He didn’t know the fan, but these interactions on the disc golf course are common for Buhr, one of the sport’s top players in the world. He can stroll in and out of most places around Iowa and go unrecognized. But the second he steps on a course, it seems everyone knows him.
“It’s cool to a certain extent,” Buhr said. “Sometimes I just want to go out and practice myself and tune the world out.”
At age 17, the Waukee Northwest High School student racked up nearly $90,000 in prize money in 2022 and tallied a victory in one of the sport’s top events. After quickly rising to fame, he could be even better next year. That’s why he’s one of the Des Moines Register‘s People to Watch for 2023.
“I think it’ll be very big because people are looking for him to prove that he is actually that good and it wasn’t just a fluke,” said disc golf star Will Schusterick.
Disc golf was the sport one that stuck
Buhr played flag football, was a pitcher in baseball, tried basketball and even played golf.
But none of those sports stuck with him. Disc golf did. He got into it when he was around 9 years old by using a disc golf basket in his neighbor’s yard.
Disc golf offered him something most of those other sports didn’t. Buhr had complete control of his results and didn’t need to rely on teammates to get him the ball, force a stop or make a big play. Buhr was the entire team.
The sport requires participants to throw discs, smaller than frisbees, into a basket in as few tries as possible. It requires precision, focus and coordination. But it’s also accessible to people of all ages and many physical abilities.
And it has become increasingly popular. According to UDisc, which helps players find the often-free courses, the number of courses in the U.S. has grown from a few hundred a few decades ago to more than 9,000 today. Travel Iowa says the state has more than 300 courses and nearly 100 tournaments, making it, potentially, “the amateur disc golf capital of the world.”
Buhr traded his junior golf clubs for golf discs and baskets. He arranged a set in the…

PGA Championship 2023: The top 100 golfers competing at Oak Hill, ranked | Golf News and Tour Information
, 2023-05-14 07:04:36,
Once known as the black sheep of golf’s four big events, the PGA Championship has arguably been the most entertaining major championship over the past decade, and the tournament will look to continue that good fortune as the golf world descends on Rochester, N.Y., for the 105th edition of the championship.
No, there will be no Tiger Woods, as the 15-time major winner is sidelined following ankle surgery last month. But the PGA will not be short on storylines. There is Jon Rahm, who can turn his Nevada-in-the-summer heater into something historic. Scottie Scheffler will try to reinsert his name as the best player on the planet. Rory McIlroy is in a bit of a slump yet remains a betting favorite, as is defending champ Justin Thomas. Speaking of title defenses, after skipping his last year, Phil Mickelson returns to the PGA amid more controversy after accusing the PGA of America of colluding with the PGA Tour against LIV Golf. And Jordan Spieth may or may not attempt to secure the career Grand Slam once more, depending on whether his injured left wrist will cooperate.
As the 2023 PGA Championship approaches, we ranked the field, hoping to give you a leg up on your friends as you watch/bet on one of the best weeks in golf.
Nos. 100-91
Trey Mullinax, Adri Arnaus, Adam Schenk, Robert Macintyre, Thorbjorn Olesen, Danny Willett, Alex Smalley, Patrick Rodgers, Yannik Paul, Joel Dahmen
Could this finally be the year Rodgers figures it out? He entered the AT&T Byron Nelson 33rd in strokes gained and 26th in scoring. The only thing hurting is Thursday, as he ranks 90th in Round 1 scoring. … Bob Mac has not become the player Scotland hoped he would be after finishing T-6 at the 2019 Open. He’s also still just 26, and for all the folks who will like Shane Lowry this week with potentially bad conditions in the forecast, make sure you put Macintyre on your list as well. … Smalley hails from Rochester, a fact you will only hear 8,000 times if he happens to be in contention.

Disc golf course possible at Napoleon’s Oakwood Park | News
, 2023-02-03 02:00:00,
By the summer, local residents may have a new recreational activity available to help have fun and get some outdoor exercise at the same time.
Disc golf is similar to regular golf, except plastic discs are thrown instead of hitting golf balls. The goal is still to obtain the lowest score, with each throw, or penalty, considered a stroke. A round is complete when the disc is thrown in a basket.

Disc golf course coming to Webb City’s King Jack Park | Local News
, 2023-02-16 02:00:00,
WEBB CITY, Mo. — A new disc golf course will be up and running in Jasper County, perhaps before this summer.
The Webb City Council recently voted to buy the baskets and build a nine-hole course on the south side of King Jack Park near the Webb City girls softball fields.
City Administrator Carl Francis said the city will spend $7,433 with Innova Disc Golf to buy 18 of the baskets.
“We’re going to build nine holes and see how it works out,” Francis said. “For the last year or two, we’ve had several groups of individuals requesting that we put a disc golf course in. The parks department has been working with the Joplin Disc Golf Club helping with the placement and design. That group is buying the tee markers.”
Francis said the city has been working with James Childers and the Joplin Disc Golf Club to design the course.
Childers said they’ve been working to get a disc golf course in King Jack Park since before the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed the process.
Childers said disc golf is a sport that people can get into for a small investment in a couple of discs.
“A set of discs is about $40, but you can really go play with one or two discs, which is $20 or $30 to start,” Childers said. “It’s just a very relaxing sport that you don’t have to get tee times. I’m a golfer, and I switched over to disc golf because it’s very laid-back. I can travel; disc golf courses are pretty much free across the U.S., and it’s just a very friendly feel to it. It’s not a sport that’s competitive; the people you meet on the course will give you discs if they find out you’re new and just starting. It’s just a very inviting community.”
Childers said he and the Joplin Disc Golf Club have been helping design courses in parks across the Joplin region.
He said McClelland Park is the flagship of regional disc golf courses with four separate courses at that park in south Joplin.
The one going in at King Jack Park is a beginner’s course.
“We’re putting in a beginner’s course to gauge the interest and provide something for the city,” Childers said. “But there’s multiple design layouts that have been put together for Webb City, so as the interest there grows, there’s a possibility for different courses there in the future.”
Francis said the disc golf course…
