The First Weekend Of ArtPrize According to a Michigan Transplant

ArtPrize is back, baby!

Since this is my first ArtPrize ever, I had no idea what to expect.

Let me tell you, my expectations were dull compared to what I was able to see throughout the city.

With the perfect set of friends and the interactive ArtPrize map, I had the perfect first ArtPrize weekend.

Need to know what to expect? There is a full article waiting for you here.

However, here is my experience on the first weekend of ArtPrize.

My friends and I started off in front of StudioPark and made our way to DeVos Place.

While it was a long trek, it was such a beautiful experience.

My friends and I stopped by Biggby Coffee next to Rosa Parks Circle. That is where I saw one of the most breathtaking art pieces.

This incredibly detailed Marilyn Monroe piece by a 19-year-old artist named William Chatlesh is made by crocheting YARN!

Once we made it to DeVos Place, I was stunned by the amount of art showcased on the walls or structures built through the facility.

There were two art collections that made my heart so happy.

I felt so seen by this art collection by Jamari Taylor.

Meeting the different artists and hearing their stories was the best part of ArtPrize.

It was so inspiring and beautiful that I had to buy a piece for my newly furnished apartment.

While my experience was amazing, I wanted to ask other people in the community how much they enjoyed the first weekend as well.

Maria left a comment on the Mix 95.7 Facebook page saying,

We arrived at DeVos Hall a few minutes before 10. I require a walker for any kind of distance, and getting there early assured that I would be able to wall and enjoy the art with little worry of disrupting someone else’s experience. We were pleased to see new works from familiar artists, but equally disappointed to see repeat work from others. There were new things to see and it was great to be back downtown again!

Megan also told us the one part of the ArtPrize that she is excited to see.

“I haven’t gone yet, BUT excited to go disc golf at the one installed at John Ball Zoo.”

Scrap to Art Metal Works, Stacy Rhines, is the artist behind Disc Golf Art at John Ball Zoo.

Disc Golf Art is a course made with standard disc golf discs. The five goals are made from repurposed steel. The best part is all attendees of ArtPrize are able to play.
