SMITHLAND, Ky. (KFVS) – On Monday, May 15, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear visited Livingston Central High School to present $7,968,505 in awards to support Livingston and Marshall Counties.

The awards will go towards supporting tourism, cleaner water, local nonprofits, renovations on the Livingston Central High School pool and renovations on the Marshall Co. Caring & Needline Food Pantry.

Livingston Co. Judge and Executive Garrett Gruber said the county is deeply grateful for the investment.

“These funded projects will assist the county in our goals of providing superior services for our residents in a multitude of areas,” Gruber said. “These projects will improve vocational education development in our school system, provide reliable water/sewer infrastructure and improve other important community services throughout the county.”

Marshall Co. Judge and Executive Kevin Spraggs also shared his enthusiasm.

“We are very excited to see this much-needed funding be awarded to Marshall Co. organizations,” Spraggs said. “The nonprofit sector and tourism industry both play a vital role in the success of Marshall Co. as a whole, and we thank Gov. Beshear for his commitment to seeing both succeed in the commonwealth.”

A release from the governor’s office breaks down the funding for each area of the awards.

Gov. Beshear awarded $1 million to the City of Benton and Marshall Co. Caring Needline to support the renovation of their food pantry. Renovation work will include a redesign of the warehouse to increase safety and efficiency and the installation of freezer space and storage. The renovations will allow Marshall County Caring Needline to better serve the over 282 families per month and the additional 325 seniors per month who rely on the facility for food.

The governor also awarded $5,687,000 to Livingston Central High School to support renovation costs for The Livingston Co. Career and Technical Center.

For tourism funding, Gov. Beshear awarded $95,000 to the Kentucky Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau to attract meetings and conventions as well as $47,455 to the Grand Rivers Tourism Commission to support travel marketing and promotion.

Additionally, $100,000 was awarded to the West Kentucky Disc Golf Project to support multi-county collaborative destination marketing. The project aims to create a regional disc golf experience by promoting courses located across participating jurisdictions.

NEWPORT, Ky. — Many people who live in and visit northern Kentucky consider the region to be a “hidden gem,” but the organization in charge of trying to get more people to visit has been successful in making it less hidden.

Northern Kentucky is the number two economic impact area in Kentucky, according to MeetNKY.

It was clear Tim Reichmuth was from out of town from his Indiana t-shirt. In an interview with Spectrum News 1, Reichmuth confirmed he was visiting Newport with his wife.

“We’re from Indianapolis,” he said. “We have been here multiple times, prior to the whole COVID thing. This is our first time back since then.”

He explained why they came back, rooted in their love for the area.

“We love the river. We love the Levee area here. We’re glad to see that it’s filling back in. We’re going to go to the aquarium, Reichmuth said. “In fact, I just had this conversation the other day with my son, who just moved back from California. I told him me and my wife Dawn were coming here. And he was like, ‘Oh, what’s there?’ And so we had this discussion, and then I sent him some pictures from the hotel we were staying at, looking out on the river. And he was like, ‘Oh, that’s fire, send me the information.’ So I think he’s coming to northern Kentucky.”

For those unaware, “fire” is a very good answer to a question the folks with MeetNKY think about constantly. President and CEO Julie Kirkpatrick does so, especially, and especially in recent years.

“During COVID, I don’t think it’s a secret that the tourism industry was damaged severely,” Kirkpatrick said.

Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman announced more than $22 million in funding for Kenton County to support law enforcement, clean water, nonprofit organizations and, of particular interest to Kirkpatrick, tourism. Kirkpatrick said the funds will help continue a recovery which, she said, has already gone very well for northern Kentucky.

Initial plans for a new 137-acre park off of Parkers Mill and Versailles roads include a 10-acre dog park, multiple athletic fields, a playground, trails and open green spaces.

Cardinal Run North, which is scheduled to open in 2024, will be the first large park to be opened in 25 years.

Cardinal Run North will offer amenities on a similar scale to other large parks, such as Jacobson Park or Shillito Park, city officials said.

The land that is now Cardinal Run North and South was donated to the city in 1997. Cardinal Run South opened in the early 2000s. However, the city did not have money to develop Cardinal Run North.

Thanks largely to federal coronavirus relief money, the city finally has money to develop the 137 acres.

On Monday, Brandstetter Carroll Inc., EHI Consultants and the city unveiled initial plans for the park at a meeting at Beaumont Middle School.

The initial plans call for much of the green space or unused areas to be located on the side of the park that backs up to residential areas including The Silks and Wellesley Heights neighborhood. The entrance to the park will be on Parkers Mill Road.

The proposed sports fields will be on the side of the park closest to New Circle Road.

Many residents of neighborhoods that abut the property said they were glad the initial designs kept all the active uses of the park — including playing fields — away from neighborhoods.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A popular disc golf destination in Louisville is being shut down by the city for violating zoning rules.

Arrowhead Disc Golf Course owners have been working for months to sort out why the course was being shut down, and what needs to happen to reopen. But after looking into its options, the course will remain closed, according to owners Roger and Vivian Wyatt.







The disc golf course started out as nothing but a hobby for the Wyatt family. Roger Wyatt and his son picked it up, then their friends, and then friends of their friends.

Since the creation of the first hole, the mom-and-pop shop has become home to a 27 hole course.

“All the disc golfers, we’ve made so many friends, you know every week,” said Vivian Wyatt.

The course is ranked in the top 60 best courses by UDisc, a popular disc golf app.

The Wyatt’s don’t charge anyone to come play. The couple said if cash is involved, it has only ever been for charity events hosted at the course.

But this year, no discs will be flying and no chains will be rattling. Last August, someone made an anonymous complaint to the city about the course.

Louisville’s Planning and Design Services department said the course needs a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to operate, and a licensing agreement with Louisville Metro, because several holes are on Metro-owned property.

In an email to WDRB, the department released the following statement:

“We received a complaint from a neighbor and sent a zoning officer out to the property. The officer found that the disc golf course was operating without the proper approvals. The owners need a conditional use permit in order to operate the disc golf course, as well as a license agreement with Louisville Metro as the course encroaches upon a neighboring Metro-owned property. The process has been explained to the owners, and they are aware of these requirements.”

The city-owned land is operated by MSD.

The Wyatt’s said they looked into getting the permits and approval.

“You have to hire someone, an engineer or surveyor and I called and the price is three to five thousand dollars,” said Vivian Wyatt.

Vivian and Roger said they are not willing to spend the money, because it is not a guarantee they can reopen. 

“The city cannot give me a guarantee we would open if we spent that because it has to go through a neighborhood meeting, and then a board meeting, and meet all the regulations they have to make sure the course is up to par,” said Vivian Wyatt.

The Wyatt’s said many people in the Louisville disc golf community have offered to help cover the costs for a surveyor.

The pair has also received a letter from MSD’s chief engineer approving its use as long as area can still serve its purpose to flood extra storm water during major flood/rain events.

In part of the letter, MSD’s chief engineer David Johnson said, “MSD has no issues with this land being used for recreational use. MSD actually encourages the use of floodprone properties for recreational uses with no structures or filling activities that would reduce the flood capacity for the property.”

In another letter sent to the Wyatt’s from Councilwoman Cindi Fowler, she said the MSD land has already been, or soon will be approved for recreational use under the Mill Creek Stream, and finds the requirement for the Wyatt’s to get a CUP redundant.

Fowler has visited the property, and told the Wyatts she is offering her help to reopen the course.
