More than $1.2 million in grants to benefit Crawford County projects | News

More than $1.2 million in state grants have been award to municipalities and municipal authorities around Crawford County to support public interest projects.

Funding came through the Commonwealth Financing Authority via the Local Share Account grant program. That program is funded by the state’s gambling revenue and is used for projects in the public interest. The grants were announced by Republican state Sen. Michele Brooks and GOP state Rep. Brad Roae, whose districts include Crawford County.

The borough of Springboro received $680,940 for a water filtration replacement project. It will replace the existing potable water filtration pressure vessels, interior plumbing and various treatment equipment components and add a third potable water filtration pressure vessel.

The borough of Conneaut Lake was awarded $200,000 toward a sanitary sewer rehabilitation along Sixth Street.

North and South Shenango Joint Municipal Authority received $150,000 to aid in extending public sanitary sewer lines along First Street in North Shenango Township.

The Economic Progress Alliance of Crawford County received $150,000 to help complete water infrastructure improvements, including replacement of a 3,600-foot waterline at the Keystone Regional Industrial Park in Greenwood Township.

Blooming Valley Borough received $30,000 to purchase snow removal equipment. The borough has contracted for the service and the grant will eliminate that cost.

Pine Township received $100,000 to purchase a new tractor and boom mower.

The city of Meadville received $50,000 to assist in the continued renovation of Huidekoper Park. The project will create a 0.65-mile walking trail to include a small stream crossing bridge, interpretive nature signs, exercise areas, a dog park, a nine-hole disc golf course, a multipurpose field, and a new basketball court with an improved drainage system and lighting. A horseshoe court, cornhole courts, a barbecue pit and parking area will also be added.

Titusville Redevelopment Authority received $58,744 for upgrades to Titusville Opportunity Park, including making the restrooms more handicap accessible.

To receive funding from the Commonwealth Finance Agency, it takes a majority vote of the CFA board and a unanimous vote of the four members appointed by the legislative caucuses.

Earlier this year, the Dalton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) installed two practice disc golf baskets outside its visitor information center that is in the old freight depot at 305 S. Depot St., just off Morris Street.

“We are trying to share with our visitors things made in Dalton and Georgia grown,” said Margaret Thigpen, director of tourism for Dalton and Whitfield County, who directs the CVB and the Dalton Convention Center.

Prodigy Disc, a Whitfield County-based manufacturer of disc golf equipment, donated one of the baskets and sold the CVB the other.

“They (the practice baskets) are getting a lot of use,” said Thigpen. “They are not only being used by our visitors, but by our locals, especially those living in the Belk building.”

“We took that idea and expanded it,” Thigpen said. “We thought it would be great to have something throughout downtown. We got with the DDDA (Downtown Dalton Development Authority), Prodigy, the Dalton Parks and Recreation Department and Whitfield County. Voila, we now have a par 2 disc golf course downtown.”

The course, which is open for play, has eight baskets in four locations: the Burr Performing Arts Park, Dalton Green, the county-owned greenspace across from the courthouse and the freight depot. Discs will be for sale at the freight depot.

“To our knowledge, this is the only permanent downtown disc golf course in the nation,” said DDDA Executive Director Candace Eaton.

“I think it’s a huge deal because it will bring a different market downtown,” Eaton said in a press release from the city. “As they walk the course they’ll see local businesses downtown or stop and eat lunch or dinner, or maybe grab a beer or shop.”

“From a tourism standpoint, it absolutely opens our downtown for visitors to have something more to do, to keep them there a little longer,” Thigpen said in the press release. “For all of our tournaments and events coming into our community, just to have something else for the visitors to do when they’re waiting for their next game or their next event, that’s a great addition.”

The Greater Dalton area has several full-sized disc golf courses.

Dalton-area residents can see some of the best disc golfers in North America compete on Saturday, April 16, at the courses at the Whitfield County Parks and Recreation Department’s Edwards Park and Westside Park.

The tournament is the finale of the Prodigy Star Series, hosted by Prodigy Disc, a Dalton-based manufacturer of disc golf discs and other equipment.

“We have hosted an event each month for the past six months,” said Will Schusterick, co-owner of Prodigy Disc, a former No. 1 disc golf player in the world and three-time winner of the U.S. Open.

“The tournament round will start at 10 a.m.,” he said. “We are more than happy to have anyone come out and watch. There are separate divisions. Westside will have the amateurs, and Edwards will have the pro division.”

Matt Zollitsch, event coordinator for Prodigy Disc, said the series has had more than 700 competitors from the United States and Canada.

“The series has brought sponsors from all over the disc golf world,” he said.

The tournament will conclude at 2 p.m. with a concert at the Burr Performing Arts Park in downtown Dalton by The Whole Fam Damily, a Dalton-based band.

“We’ll have live music, disc golf vendors,” said Schusterick. “It will be a fun atmosphere, and we welcome everyone to come out and take part.”

According to Sports Illustrated, disc golf was one of the few sports that thrived during the COVID-19 pandemic, “likely partially due to its ability to be played outdoors and socially distanced. But it was also the continuation of a growth trend that occurred through the 2010s.”

The magazine reported that the Professional Disc Golf Association now has 150,000 members, “with 70,000 of those retaining active status for tournaments — a figure that’s doubled since 2016.”

The Whitfield County Parks and Recreation Department’s Westside Park Disc Golf Course was voted one of the top four courses in the United States in 2020 by the readers of Connect Magazine. It finished behind Maple Hill Disc Golf in Leicester, Massachusetts; Quaker’s Challenge at Gifford Pinchot State Park, Lewisberry, Pennsylvania; and Blue Ribbon Pines, East Bethel, Minnesota.

“We see people from out of town daily playing these courses,” said Whitfield County Parks and Recreation Department Director Brian Chastain.

In addition to the courses at Edwards Park and Westside Park, which were designed by Schusterick, there is a disc golf course at Heritage Point Park in Dalton and a nine-hole course at the Tunnel Hill Golf Club. There are also two practice baskets on the grassy area next to the train tracks at the old freight depot off Morris Street in Dalton.
