The Bridgwater Links at London Bridge Resort disc golf course opened just two weeks ago in Lake Havasu City and Saturday, it hosted its first disc golf tournament.
The Lake Havasu Classic Battle at Bridgewater featured 90 players from throughout the Southwest and East Coast.
“We have 90 players registered and we’ve partnered with GraceArts Live. All donations we receive for the tournament – 50 percent goes back to GraceArts Live and 50 percent goes back to our tournament,” said tournament director Mercedes Kaiser. GraceArts Live is a performing arts theater in Lake Havasu City.
Kaiser said that she and assistant tournament director Graham Russell and all those involved with the event are focused on building a youth disc golf program in Lake Havasu schools.
“We’ve been collecting donated discs and equipment from our last tournament in February and this tournament.”
“Last week, we donated a basket and a bunch of discs to Jamaica Elementary School and we’re very excited to introduce disc golf into schools,” she said.
The club is currently focusing on schools within the Unified School District but have plans to expand their donations to other schools as their funds grow.
Saturday’s tournament included players from Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and California, as well as players from the East Coast.
“We’ve drawn a pretty exciting group of people,” Kaiser said.
Bridgewater Links golf course is open to disc golfers after 4 p.m., daily. Players should call ahead for a tee time. Check in at the clubhouse and it’s $15 to play with a cart and $10 walking.
