Disc nationals coming to Thunder Bay | Sports
, 2022-06-03 13:32:00,
Thunder Bay has beat out Grande Prairie, Alta., in a bidding war to host the 2023 Canadian National Disc Golf Championships.
According to the Canadian Disc Golf Association, both of the submitted bids were strong proposals and it wasn’t an easy decision to make.
Chris Ozolins, president of the Ontario Disc Sports Association (ODSA), said this is the first time the national championship has been back in Ontario in more than 10 years, which is nice because the majority of Canadian disc golfers are actually from Ontario.
Ozolins credits the annual Northern Ontario tournament that his organization brought to Thunder Bay over the last three years with shining up their national bid.
“We had 190 participants last year, coming straight out of COVID, and we’re aiming for the same amount this year again,” he said. “The whole premise behind that was we wanted to set a precedent that Thunder Bay was going to have the infrastructure to host a much larger championship in the future.”
The ODSA has been working with the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) and Tourism Thunder Bay, to submit an attractive bid for the National Championship using the precedent they have set with the Northern Ontario championship in the past.
And it worked.
“We’ve been funded by the CEDC and we have a partnership with them and a promising bit of funding if we were to ascertain the same 2023 national championship, “ said Ozolins. “That was all part of our 36-page bid document. We ended up short-listed against Grand Prairie as a finalist. We did our interviews, we won the bids and so now we’ll be hosting the event.

Disc golf pro touts Snyder County’s Faylor Lake course as ‘gem’ | News
, 2022-05-16 20:30:00,
BEAVER SPRINGS — After visiting Snyder County’s disc golf course in Beaver Springs last week, professional disc golf player Simon Lizotte touted it as a fun “gem” in a YouTube video he posted online.
“This is a new gem on the East Coast for sure,” said the German-born disc golfer who lives in Massachusetts and documents his visits to courses around the world. His YouTube channel has 152,000 subscribers.
Lizotte visited the 18-hole disc golf course at the Snyder County-owned Faylor Lake on Thursday. A 25-minute video of his visit was “liked” by 3,500 YouTube viewers.
“He’s the Tiger Woods of disc golf,” said Snyder County Commissioner Joe Kantz, expressing excitement at having the world champion visit the new course designed by Steve Braud at the 800-acre property that features a 140-acre lake.
“Disc golf appears to be one of the fastest growing sports in the world. To have a professional in this sport visit the course at Faylor Lake is huge,” said Commissioner Adam Ewig. Reading “the reviews of the park and watching the course come to life is confirmation that this project made best use of that part of the lake property.”
Lee Zimmerman, who helped build the course and maintains it, said Lizotte arrived at about 6 a.m. last Thursday and immediately the bucolic setting paid off.
“Only minutes after shooting the video’s intro footage, a bald eagle swooped into the lake for a fish and they managed to capture the eagle flying above the water, it’s reflection mirrored in the steaming lake below it,” said Zimmerman.
Lizotte, who is ranked 11th in the world and has been playing…

Susquehanna Greenway Partnership to host first Outdoor Expo Jaxon White | Inside Pennsylvania
, 2022-05-10 10:45:00,
The Susquehanna Valley is known for its beautiful scenery, but the various geographic features in the area support a wide variety of recreational activities.
Increasing interest in outdoor recreation is one of the reasons the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership is hosting the 2022 Outdoor Expo on June 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, at Shikellamy State Park. The demonstrations and displays will take place in the Marina section of the park on ____ Island. However, anyone attending who has never visited Shikellamy Lookout, should do so before you leave the area. The view of the West and North Branches of the Susquehanna River provides an incredible view of the valley.
John Zaktansky of the Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Assoc, Inc., one of the sponsors of the Expo, said Shikellamy State Park was chosen because it’s a central location along the Susquehanna River — and within Pennsylvania. “So, we thought it’d be the perfect place to bring [the outdoor] community together,” said John Zaktansky of Susquehanna Riverkeepers.
“With the onset of the pandemic,” said Alana Jajko, Director of Communications and Outreach for SGP, “we saw a lot of new folks outside hiking, biking, kayaking.” She continued by explaining that, with so many new recreational opportunities, there is a need for displays, educational exhibits and presentations. Jayjko assures both novices and experts in a sport, that they’ll find something helpful or of interest at the Expo.
SGP is planning an event similar to those held in many other states. Until now, Pennsylvania has gone without one on this scale. To date, more than 50 exhibitors…
