Disc golf course coming to Webb City’s King Jack Park | Local News

WEBB CITY, Mo. — A new disc golf course will be up and running in Jasper County, perhaps before this summer.

The Webb City Council recently voted to buy the baskets and build a nine-hole course on the south side of King Jack Park near the Webb City girls softball fields.

City Administrator Carl Francis said the city will spend $7,433 with Innova Disc Golf to buy 18 of the baskets.

“We’re going to build nine holes and see how it works out,” Francis said. “For the last year or two, we’ve had several groups of individuals requesting that we put a disc golf course in. The parks department has been working with the Joplin Disc Golf Club helping with the placement and design. That group is buying the tee markers.”

Francis said the city has been working with James Childers and the Joplin Disc Golf Club to design the course.

Childers said they’ve been working to get a disc golf course in King Jack Park since before the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed the process.

Childers said disc golf is a sport that people can get into for a small investment in a couple of discs.

“A set of discs is about $40, but you can really go play with one or two discs, which is $20 or $30 to start,” Childers said. “It’s just a very relaxing sport that you don’t have to get tee times. I’m a golfer, and I switched over to disc golf because it’s very laid-back. I can travel; disc golf courses are pretty much free across the U.S., and it’s just a very friendly feel to it. It’s not a sport that’s competitive; the people you meet on the course will give you discs if they find out you’re new and just starting. It’s just a very inviting community.”

Childers said he and the Joplin Disc Golf Club have been helping design courses in parks across the Joplin region.

He said McClelland Park is the flagship of regional disc golf courses with four separate courses at that park in south Joplin.

The one going in at King Jack Park is a beginner’s course.

“We’re putting in a beginner’s course to gauge the interest and provide something for the city,” Childers said. “But there’s multiple design layouts that have been put together for Webb City, so as the interest there grows, there’s a possibility for different courses there in the future.”

The Enterprise Pilot Club is hosting its annual Civic Night reception to honor the newly chosen Man, Woman, and Youth of the Year for 2022.

The event is Thursday night at the First Baptist Church of Enterprise in the Fellowship Hall at 6:30 p.m.

Woman of the Year nominees are Heather Jones, Stacy Thames, Kimberly Hoobler, and Sonya Wheeler Rich.

Man of the Year nominees are James Tarbox, Jason Berry Thames, and Rodrick Caldwell.

Youth of the Year nominees are Celesia Page, Ella Hogan, Emily Turner, Faith Lett, Arianna Johnson, and Tyler Mitchell.

Heather JonesThe OSCAR Club nominated Heather Jones, who has lived in Enterprise since 1998. She graduated from Enterprise High School and studied at Troy University.

Jones attends HighPointe Church. Jones is a Coffee County Habitat for Humanity board member serving on the Family Selection Committee. She helped plan the Father Daughter Dinner and was a volunteer member of the kitchen staff, service, and clean up.

Jones was selected by the Coffee County United Way Representative as a loaned executive with Wiregrass United Way Campaign. She has served two years as a loaned executive speaking at schools and businesses to assist with their campaign. Volunteering with the Enterprise Chamber of Commerce she is a member of the board of directors and was selected for the Enterprise Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Team serving as a member for three years and Team Captain for two years. She shares her expertise as a volunteer marketing director for the Alpha Elite Lions basketball organization. Serving with the Wiregrass Board of Realtors she worked with blood drives and as a Salvation Army bell ringer. She gave her time to make Christmas better for seniors and children at Christmas. MURRAY – The Murray Parks Committee last week approved two planned Playhouse in the Park events for later this year, as well as accepting a donation of security cameras and renewing its lawnmower lease.

Playhouse in the Park Executive Director Lisa Copeland spoke to the committee about a “ghost light walk” the community theater would like to do toward the back of the park in conjunction with Halloween. She said the Playhouse Board of Directors has tentatively planned to hold the family-friendly event from 5-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13-14, and they would ideally like to put a traffic barricade up next to the Saputo Playground to ensure safety for the participants.

After what seems like the longest winter ever, it’s finally a decent spring day in the lakeside Village of Buena Vista. The snow is finally receding on the community’s 9-basket disc golf course. Not that it really matters when it comes to the popular game of disc golf that can be played year-round. 

The website discsportshistory.com says, “According to The Complete Book of Frisbee, disc golf’s earliest recorded history was in Bladworth, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1926. Ronald Gibson and a group of his Bladworth Elementary School buddies played a game of throwing tin lids into 4-foot wide circles drawn into sandy patches on their school grounds. They called the game Tin Lid Golf and played fairly regularly. However, after they grew older and went their separate ways, the game ended.” Fast forwarding to 2023, according to the udisc.com website, there are more than 14,000 courses worldwide. In 2022, 4.3 courses were being installed daily.

The community of Buena Vista has jumped on the disc golf game. President of the Buena Vista Parks and Rec Committee, Donna Hall, said, “We had this park, and no one would ever go there because no one ever knew it was there. A big open space where nothing happened. I knew disc golf was becoming popular in the province so I thought well, why don’t we give this a try.”

In 2019 after researching the viability and consultation with people knowledgeable about disc golf, the area was designed in 2020 they got going. “We said ok, let’s do it.” They ordered the baskets, and in 2021 the course took shape. Community donations came in to help them put it together. By the end of July, they had their grand opening. “And it’s taken off ever since. It’s really popular.” The game is free to play, and the Udisc website offers an app that keeps score and lists all of the disc courses in the world.

The game is played like golf and takes around 45 minutes. Frisbee-like discs are used instead of golf balls. The discs are smaller than a child’s frisbee. “You can get a long-range disc, you can get a putter, you can get a short-range, you can get all kinds of different variations of discs.” Discs can be relatively inexpensive and purchased online and in some sporting stores. Players “tee off” from a cement pad to get their disc into the basket at the end of each “hole.” The course is considered a par three, so it should take…

ABU DHABI, 13th April, 2023 (WAM) – Abu Dhabi is set to host The Challenge Tour in the UAE for the first time in five years with two events showcasing golf’s next generation of talent, along with a host of local players bidding to shine on the big stage.

According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office (ADMO), the two events, the Abu Dhabi Challenge at Abu Dhabi Golf Club from 27th to 30th April 2023, and the UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club 4th to 7th May 2023, are part of the European Tour group’s long-term partnership with the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF), which aims to develop golf in the UAE for at least the next decade.

Thirty spots in each tournament will be allocated to the EGF to help create playing opportunities and provide a pathway for Emirati golfers. The EGF can also trade these places with other federations across the world to give their players an opportunity to play in Challenge Tour events overseas.

Excitement is starting to build ahead of the Challenge Tour’s return to the UAE for the first time in five years, with Emirati number one Ahmed Skaik raring to go after a year-long injury lay-off.

Skaik, who will be playing both tournaments, is aiming to replicate the form that saw him play his way into the history books just four months before injuring a disc in his lower back, which kept him out of competitive action for a year.

The UAE National fired the lowest DP World Tour round by an Emirati on the opening day of the 2021 AVIV Dubai Championship, with an impressive four under par 68 on the Fire Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Skaik said: “I’m very excited to get out there and play. I’ve obviously played at Abu Dhabi Golf Club many times and during the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they will set the course up for a Challenge Tour event.

“Playing in tournaments like this will help my game, especially coming back from injury. It gives me vital experience of playing in bigger events and under pressure which then helps me deal with pressure in some of the smaller events.”

While the Emirates Golf Federation has 30 spots to use in each tournament, they can elect to trade these places with other federations across the world to give UAE players the opportunity to play in Challenge Tour events overseas, with Skaik expected to play five more additional tournaments on this year’s Road to…

Pickleball is becoming a huge new sport for people of all ages to try.  But where can you play in Western New York?

Ever heard someone say that they were going to play pickleball and been completely confused as to what it was?  Us too!  But it’s become a super popular game that people of all ages are picking up.

What is pickleball?

Pickleball is a game that could be the baby if tennis, badminton, and ping pong all got together.  It’s played with paddles and whiffle balls on a full-size badminton court.  While it’s just starting to really pick up in the United States, it’s been around since 1965. One of the things that has really made the sport pick up over the years is how easy it is to learn.

The game starts with an underhanded serve that has to be hit cross-court.  Just like in ping pong, the ball can only bounce once per side.  But the game continues until the ball either bounces twice on one side or is hit out of bounds.  Games go to either 11 or 15.

There is actually a USA Pickleball Association

The USA Pickleball Association has made it their mission to promote the sport, maintain the rules, and host tournaments.  They have all kinds of tips for things to wear, equipment you’ll need, and specific dimensions of the court and net height when you click here.

Where can you play in Western New York?

So where can you play here?  The answer is, pretty much anywhere with a badminton court.  But if you’re looking for some specific places to go, Google has some places they will suggest and even reviews from people who have played there.  Here are just a couple of them:

If you love pickleball then be sure to check out this facility! We are from Waterloo, Ontario Canada and we decided to spend a weekend and play here. It’s drop in play, so we decided to play the Saturday 9:00am open play all skill level session. It was rather busy but the staff are super organized and keep the games moving…paddles are boxed in winners and non-winners and alternately pulled in groups of 4 for the next available court. Organizers are expecting a “really big crowd” to turn out for a sport and recreation fair at MacBain Community Centre April 15.

The City of Niagara Falls’ recreation and culture department is hosting a one-stop shop for families to discover programs and activities such as martial arts, dance, music, soccer, baseball and rowing.

The event is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. at the centre, located at Montrose and McLeod roads.

Attendance for families is free and registration is not required.

More than 40 organizations are scheduled to participate.

DJ Brooks, a recreation assistant with the city, said the fair held last year was “very well attended.”

“That was kind of in conjunction with the MacBain opening back up after COVID, just trying to help all of our community partners and get the word out that everything was kind of up and running again,” he said.

“I think we had 28 or 30 vendors – we have 40 plus a few more (this year). We’ve had to turn away groups that aren’t necessarily in Niagara Falls because we had such a huge response.”

Brooks said sport and recreation is in “high demand.”

“Kids and families are back participating. We’re expecting a really big crowd. We’re hoping that we get a lot of the community out as well to see all the different things that are available in our community,” he said.

“We know that the vendors, for sure – the community groups – are excited about it, so we’re hoping the community participates as well.”

Brooks said organizers have opened this year’s fair up to organizations beyond sports and recreation.

“We’ve got the native centre coming, we’ve got the Institute of Music and Art, St. John Ambulance for different courses they provide,” he said.

“If anyone comes and visits on the 15th, it’s totally free – it costs no money, but you get to go talk to Niagara Falls Soccer Club or one of the multiple cricket clubs or maybe you’ve watched curling on TV but have never been to a curling club, talk to the curling club when they’re here.”

Brooks said organizations are looking to get new registrations and want to get the message out into the community that they exist.

“Hopefully they can get a bunch of registrations out of this and we can continue to grow an active, healthy community.”

Susan Marie Rathke of Emporia passed away on March 31, 2023, due to complications from cancer. She was 67.

Susan was born on October 19, 1955, in Kansas City, Kansas to Milton D Merritt and Shirley Marie (Cowgill) Merritt. She was the third of four children. Susan grew up in the KCK area, winning spelling bees, belonging to 4-H, the Camp Fire Girls, the Presbyterian Church and its youth group, and other clubs and groups. She truly enjoyed working on her parents’ Christmas tree farm.

She was a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) for high level swimming skills, gave swim lessons, and was a lifeguard for several pools in the KCK area throughout her high school and college years assisting with many AAU swim events. She was also on the Washington High School girls swim team and was involved in theater productions. Susan was an avid softball player in her early years and continued to play through her twenties and early thirties.

Susan came to Emporia in 1973 to attend KSTC and never left. She graduated from ESU in 1977, being one of the rare students to attend KSTC, EKSC, and ESU. She worked in banking for 16 years, starting at Citizens National Bank and finishing her banking years as the Office and Supply Manager at Columbia Savings. She joined the Emporia Chamber of Commerce office team and enjoyed over 28 years working with the public, eventually retiring as the Convention and Visitors Bureau Director.

Susan was instrumental to many community groups, serving on numerous boards including the Emporia Rec. Commission, ESPI, Twin Rivers Festival, and many more. Susan was often called upon by various organizations due to her knowledge and experience in planning successful activities and events. Some of these include such notable events as the All-Veterans’ Tribute, many disc golf tournaments, and the (DK) Unbound Gravel biking races. Susan will long be remembered for her dedication to making Emporia a great place to visit, live, and play. Susan was also involved with many state and regional groups for tourism including the Travel Industry Association of Kansas and the Flint Hills Tourism Coalition, where her opinion was requested, respected, and appreciated.

On June 25, 1977, she was married at the First Presbyterian Church in KCK, to Edward J. Rathke. To this union three children were born, Leslie Ann Seeley, Russell (Rusty) Edward…
