Quite a week for Eichhorn, Kretz

Throughout his years in junior golf and then at Marquette University, Hunter Eichhorn demonstrated the rare ability to stack birdies and take rounds deep into red numbers.

That attribute showed up last week in Monday qualifying for the Veritex Bank Championship. Eichhorn, of Carney, Mich., shot a 9-under 62 at Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound, Texas, to share medalist honors and earn a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour event.

In his KFT debut, he shot an opening 66 at Texas Rangers Golf Club, added a 69 to make the 36-hole cut and went on to finish T-60 at 5-under 279. He earned $4,030.

Meanwhile, some 775 miles due north in Vermillion, S.D., South Dakota State sophomore Ty Kretz of Marinette was putting on a show in a dual meet against South Dakota.

Kretz matched the school record with a 7-under 65 in the first round at the Bluffs Golf Course and finished the 36-hole event at 13-under 131, also a program record.

Kretz finished first individually and was named Summit League player of the week. The Jackrabbits shot 19-under 269 in the second round and 30-under 546 for 36 holes, both program records.

The bunkers on the Blue Spruce course at Brighton Dale Links will be overhauled. The bunkers were built in 1972, Drier said.

The projects are part of the golf division’s 2023-’25 capital improvement plan and will cost the county $4 million. That money is coming from user fees, which were raised for the first time in 15 years last fall to help generate revenue.

According to its 2023 budget,…
