What better way to celebrate a 10-year “anniversaflea” than with a “Flea-cathalon”?
The Flea, a dive bar located at 637 S. Kimbrough Ave., is celebrating a decade of business on Wednesday, Sept. 21. In celebration, the bar is hosting its first Flea-Cathalon, a day-long event full of cold drinks and friendly competition, on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Teams of five may participate in 10 bar games, including darts, pool, disc golf, bags/cornhole, beer pong, flip cup, putt-putt golf, trivia, tiki toss and Wii Sports bowling.
Each member of a team must compete in two events. The top three teams for each event will be awarded points (three points for first, two points for second, one point for third). The team member who places first in each event will receive an individual prize related to that event. For example, the winner of putt-putt golf will receive a Miller Light Callaway golf bag.
The overall top three teams will be awarded prizes.
To register a team, message The Flea on Facebook at facebook.com/thefleabarsgf. The first 15 teams to register will receive a game-day player’s pack, including Flea-cathalon headbands, coozies and stickers. The deadline to register is Sept. 12.

In addition to the competition, there will be a hot dog cart and new Flea merchandise available for purchase.

Keeping the ‘spirit’ alive
The Flea opened in fall 2012, following the closure of Harlow’s, a beloved bar known for its local live music, drink specials and “divey” atmosphere. Harlow’s opened in the early 1980s.
Prior to Harlow’s, the space was a barbecue restaurant, with a hair salon in the back, where The Flea’s game room is today.
A priority for Flea owner Grady Wisdom was keeping the “spirit” of Harlow’s alive, while creating his own, unique space.
“There was a lot of pressure when we were opening,” Wisdom said. Many Harlow’s regulars visited the bar for three decades, and he didn’t want to lose their trust.
“We had our logo up on the windows blocking in, not really saying what (it was going to be),” Wisdom said. “I remember one of the regulars, now who we really love, put a Sticky note on the door and said, ‘Hate the name. Try again.’ We were like, ‘Okay, well we are going to do it anyway.’ (Harlow’s regulars) were worried about somebody coming in and losing their home.”
