While there are many feathers in Kentucky’s cap, our ties to the 16th U.S. President are certainly one of our state’s proudest features. Born in the Bluegrass State, there are many dedicated areas where you can learn about Abraham Lincoln’s early life in our state, and one place is the Lincoln Homestead State Park. One of the official 45 Kentucky State Parks, at just 120 acres, Lincoln Homestead State Park is also one of the smallest. But despite its diminutive size, Lincoln Homestead State Park is a place worthy of its larger-than-life namesake.
Lincoln Homestead State Park is located in Springfield, Kentucky, not far from many other historic sites in the area.In fact, if you’re a history buff, you could easily spend a weekend exploring the history of this region of the Bluegrass — the smallest state park in Kentucky included.
Although it’s only 120 acres in size, this Kentucky State Park is packed with amazing recreation, compelling historic significance, and unrivaled scenic beauty.
Most folks know Lincoln Homestead State Park for its history: the park features the original home of Lincoln’s mother, as well as replicas of the 1782 cabin and blacksmith shop where his father was reared and learned his trade.
You’ll also find the home of Mordecai Lincoln, the favorite uncle of the President, along with split-rail fences and pioneer furniture that portray the rugged pioneer life. Please note that there is an admission fee of $5/adults and $3/children at the museum.
This land features several replicas of buildings from the 1700s of historic significance. Each building has descriptions and interesting facts so you can learn all about the life of the Lincoln’s.
But this park is no one-trick pony; it offers a little bit of everything, from an 18-hole regulation golf corse and disc golf course to fishing and even a children’s playground.
In fact, the golf course winds right through the park and past several historic buildings!
At 6 feet, 4 inches, Abraham Lincoln was the tallest U.S. President; truly a man with presence. And while Lincoln Homestead State Park is one of the smallest Kentucky State Parks, it’s a beautiful place with a presence all its own, and definitely worth discovering!
