At 800 feet above sea level, Cedar Hill is the highest point in a straight line between the Red River and the Gulf Coast. Some refer to it as the Hill Country of Dallas, but we’re not sure who they are. We just know it’s a good place for Doppler radar equipment and trees, which can be found aplenty on its 3,000 acres of protected nature reserves and preserves. So wear comfortable shoes when you go.

Cedar Hill State Park 

If you find yourself wanting a little more than a daytrip, consider one of the many campsites in this state park. Rates start at $10 and go up to $30 if you plan to bring an RV. Bike the trails, fish Joe Pool Lake, and park your phone in the glove box. 1570 FM Rd. 1382

1846 Coffee 

You can stop by for a quick cup of joe to get your morning started, but don’t miss out on the cozy vibes this coffee shop has to offer. Admire the works of local artists displayed on the exposed brick walls while enjoying one of their cinnamon rolls, served warm and topped with a generous dollop of icing. 610 Cedar St. 469-454-6124

Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center

Make a reservation for the guided hike on the Canyon Floor Trail. It lasts about 30 minutes and costs $60, with a maximum of 25 people per group. Bring a stroller for any tuckered-out toddlers. They can listen for songbirds and spot the feeding holes of yellow-bellied sapsuckers. 1206 W. FM Rd. 1382

Lester Lorch Nature Preserve

Exercise your competitive spirit on one of the two 18-hole disc golf courses at this 86-acre nature preserve. Play the longer Beaver course with pond views, and then unwind with a packed lunch at one of the picnic tables. 1823 Texas Plume Rd. 972-291-5100

Ash and Ember Brewery 

After first brewing at home, owners Brian Krajcirovic and Tim Martin opened Ash and Ember Brewery to create a community around their passion. Order the flight tour, which includes four 4-ounce pours of your choice and a branded glass to take home. 226 Texas St. 972-637-3450
