Tour Bainbridge Island’s Historical Attractions
Bainbridge Island has historical attractions that shed light on its past rich heritage.
The Bainbridge Island Historical Museum
Visitors to the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum will see artifacts like axes, tools, utensils, shoes, recipes, maps and navigational charts, and others that date back to 1841.
There also are over 9000 historical photographs in prints, negatives, and slides.
Museum exhibits here help visitors learn about the lifestyles of Native American families, explorers, plus Croats who settled at Bainbridge Island in the 1880s.
- Entry is free, and the museum opens from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.
The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial
During World War II, Japanese immigrants who came to Bainbridge Island in the 1880s were forcibly removed from their homes and taken to concentration camps around the country.
A Pearl Harbor Museum does cover the history at Pearl Harbor, but it focuses on the war and that specific attack.
Opened first to the public on July 30, 2011, this memorial, in contrast, honors those Japanese immigrants who were removed and island locals who stood by them and opposed the removal and welcomed them back after the war.
It serves as a reminder that this dark moment in U.S history is not to be repeated.
- There is no fee to see the memorial, and it is always open.
Suquamish Museum
For thousands of years, the Suquamish people have inhabited Puget Sound (and it remains popular for whale watching) and, to date, still follow their traditional ways of life. The Suquamish Museum educates visitors on the traditions, history, and lifestyles of the Suquamish people.
At the Port Madison Indian Reservation, the Suquamish People still live there and follow the traditions of their ancestors and can be visited too.
