2023 Ratings-Based Registration Schedule Announced

DGPT Sponsor Exemption Applications Now Open

January 11th, 2023: While most of the field at 2023 Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) events will fill with 2023 Tour Card holders, the DGPT will also allow competitors to register for its regular season events via a tiered registration schedule based on PDGA player ratings. The first wave of registration will allow MPO competitors with a 1000+ player rating and FPO competitors with a 900+ player rating to enter events. Each successive wave will allow players with lower ratings to register in addition to the players who fall into the earlier ratings-based tiers. Wave one tier one ratings-based registration will become available on the evening of Friday, January 13th. 

The number of spots available for ratings-based entry will fluctuate based on overall field size. The DGPT will maintain a waitlist for its events and will promote players from the waitlist based on ratings if spots become available. A limited number of sponsor exemptions are also available for each regular season event. Full details and instructions to apply for a sponsor exemption are now available on the Tour’s website.

Buckle up, the Disc Golf Pro Tour now heads to Texas for the Waco Annual Charity Open presented by Prodigy.

The second stop of the 2023 season promises better weather and the return of a couple of familiar faces. While the Las Vegas Challenge forced players to contend with cold temperatures and ripping winds, calmer conditions in Waco will give players the opportunity to focus on shaping their shots through the woods and showcasing their distance in the open along the Brazos River in central Texas.

Both the MPO and FPO fields will play all three rounds at Brazos Park East (nicknamed The BEast). This course was first featured on the DGPT in 2017 after being redesigned in 2014. In stark contrast to the wide-open fairways of the Vegas courses, Brazos Park East features shorter holes and tight lines through dense woods. Holes 4 through 12 in particular force players to carve their way through narrow gaps between the trees, showcasing what makes disc golf a unique sport more so than the rolling hills and sand traps of a ball golf style course.

Since the challenging nature of Brazos Park East comes from accuracy rather than distance, many holes have identical pars and tee pad locations for both the FPO and MPO fields. Fans can look forward to watching their favorite players attacking the same holes in either field with just a few holes featuring adjusted pars or different tee pad positions.

After an exciting finish to the 2023 Waco Annual Charity Open, the Disc Golf Pro Tour continues its Texas swing with the 2023 Open at Austin presented by Lone Star Disc.

This will be the third Elite Series event of the 2023 season as well as the first ever DGPT event in Austin, Texas.

While this event is new for the tour, The Open Disc Golf Championship got its start with The Open at Woodville in 2015. After becoming a Professional A-Tier in 2016 and changing locations twice in the next two years, The Open DGC was introduced to Heritage Park in Belton. The Open at Belton made its debut in 2019, still as a Professional A-Tier. Although the 2020 Open at Belton would be postponed less than a week before it was scheduled to start, it came back in 2021 as a Silver Series Event.

The Open at Belton returned in 2022, but construction at Heritage Park forced The Open DGC to relocate once again in 2023. Austin seemed like a natural fit for their next location, coming in at #8 in UDisc’s Top 10 Disc Golf Cities in the United States. A new temporary course has been set up specifically for this event at the Harvey Penick Golf Campus.

UPDATE: Ricky Wysocki has withdrawn from All-Star weekend due to a wrist injury. 

Gannon Buhr will take over as captain for Team Ricky, but the team name will remain the same on UDisc and Disc Golf Network throughout the weekend.

Corey Ellis will be filling in for Wysocki and will take his place for Friday’s skills and Saturday’s doubles competition. Ellis will also become the new #6 seed for Team Ricky in Sunday’s singles competition and will face off against Kevin Jones. All other players on Team Ricky will now be bumped up one spot in the singles seeding, with Gannon Buhr representing the #1 seed against Paul McBeth.

The Third Annual Disc Golf Pro Tour All-Star Weekend has arrived! The team captains: Catrina Allen, Ohn Scoggins, Paul McBeth, and Ricky Wysocki have set their teams in hopes to win the third annual All-Star event. The 2023 All-Star event is taking place this weekend February 17-19, 2023 at the Pusch Ridge Temp course set up at El Conquistador Resort in Tucson, Arizona.

Broken out, both the FPO and MPO divisions have two teams competing. These four teams have six players each, and the players will compete to earn points for their teams. Ryan is suing the DGPT, PDGA, and organizers of the OTB Open for violating California law

On the eve of the 2023 professional disc golf season, Natalie Ryan sued the PDGA, Disc Golf Pro Tour, and 1000 Rated Productions, the host of the OTB Open.

In a complaint filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, Ryan and her attorney Brian Sciacca argue that the PDGA policy effectively prohibiting transgender women from competing in the FPO division on the pro tour violated her civil rights and California laws against discrimination.

“The policy adopted by the PDGA and DGPT is arbitrary and capricious and in violation of Plaintiff’s right to be free from discrimination based on her gender,” the suit says.

It alleges that the PDGA’s new rules on the eligibility of transgender women to play in FPO for majors, which block from the competition trans women who have undergone gender-affirming treatment later than the age of 12, were a “direct response to [Ryan’s] success on the DGPT.”

The policy has “denied Plaintiff and other transgender women, who in the eyes of California law are women, full and equal access to the accommodations, advantages, facilities, privileges, and/or services of Defendant’s organizations,” the complaint says.
