Crandall Park disc golf reported popular by park beneficiary committee
, 2023-01-08 18:00:00,
GLENS FALLS — The disc golf course at Crandall Park has been used substantially in the past year, according to the 2022 annual report issued by Jaimen Hume.
Hume is a professional disc golfer who designed the course with Jon Hotmer in November 2020. Hume is also a member of the disc golf course subcommittee and supplied the statistics of course usage to the Crandall Park Beautification Committee via email.
The popularity of the course has been measured by the smartphone app Udisc. It helps disc golfers keep track of scorekeeping, statistics and allows for discovery of new courses.App developers told Hume that the rounds played that are logged using the app accounted for about 20% of rounds, or plays, on the course.
“Crandall Park finished out the year at 5,605 plays, up from 4,063 last year, on Udisc. The app developers guess that 20% of players use the app, so that number is theoretically at 28,025 plays! That’s an astounding number and a ton of usage of the park,” Hume said in an email.

South Wichita park has been planned to death. Just build it.
, 2023-01-08 05:30:00,
Shakin’ my head again today at Wichita City Hall. This time, it’s over the former Clapp Golf Course, again.
On the City Council agenda for Tuesday is an item to spend an additional $530,000 for planning the first phase of what will replace the 65-year-old golf course that was shut down in 2019. That’s in addition to $206,000 already spent on developing the park’s master plan.
The question of the day is, is this really necessary?
Plans for the park have already been scaled down from an ambitious $28 million master plan including a bistro, indoor-outdoor farmer’s market, performance stage, BMX bike track, sports courts and other amenities.
Now, it’s basically about disc golf, open space for walking, a dog park and a children’s playground. There are 14 bridges out there, some serviceable, some old and dangerous.
I’m having a hard time understanding why accomplishing the tasks at hand requires spending another half-million-dollars on someone from out of town with a briefcase.
Funny thing is, the city closed the golf course because it had been losing money for several years (although it was making money at the end). On Tuesday, the City Council might end up spending as much or more on consulting fees than the course was losing.
The improvements currently planned seem pretty simple and should be well within the capabilities of City Hall, without a lot of outside help:
▪ The disc golf course is already there. The city gets $300 a month for the use of the clubhouse by a disc golf entrepreneur who gets to sell equipment, snacks and drinks to players, with access to 95 acres of city parkland for the activity.
▪ Open space? Plenty there already.
▪ A dog park is…

Urbandale teen is disc golf rising star | Iowa
, 2023-01-01 00:01:00,
URBANDALE, Iowa (AP) — The sun was starting to set on a warm November day as Gannon Buhr walked off the disc golf course at Urbandale’s Waterford Park. Buhr stops when a man walking a dog notices him.
“Great season this year,” the man yells to Buhr, who was out trying some new discs.
He didn’t know the fan, but these interactions on the disc golf course are common for Buhr, one of the sport’s top players in the world. He can stroll in and out of most places around Iowa and go unrecognized. But the second he steps on a course, it seems everyone knows him.
“It’s cool to a certain extent,” Buhr told the Des Moines Register. “Sometimes I just want to go out and practice myself and tune the world out.”
At age 17, the Urbandale resident and Waukee Northwest High School student racked up nearly $90,000 in prize money in 2022 and tallied a victory in one of the sport’s top events. After quickly rising to fame, he could be even better next year. That’s why he’s one of the Des Moines Register’s People to Watch for 2023.
“I think it’ll be very big because people are looking for him to prove that he is actually that good and it wasn’t just a fluke,” said disc golf star Will Schusterick.
Buhr played flag football, was a pitcher in baseball, tried basketball and even played golf, with a regular club and a small ball.
But none of those sports stuck with him. Disc golf did. He got into it when he was around 9 years old by using a disc golf basket in his neighbor’s yard.
Disc golf offered him something most of those other sports didn’t. Buhr had complete control of his results and didn’t need to rely on teammates to get him the ball, force a stop or make a big play. Buhr was the entire team.
The sport requires participants to throw discs, smaller than frisbees, into a basket in as few tries as possible. It requires precision, focus and coordination. But it’s also accessible to people of all ages and many physical abilities.
And it has become increasingly popular. According to UDisc, which helps players find the often-free courses, the number of courses in the U.S. has grown from a few hundred a few decades ago to more than 9,000 today. Travel Iowa says the state has more than 300 courses and nearly 100 tournaments, making it, potentially, “the amateur disc golf capital of the world.”
Buhr traded his…

A major Republican victory in Lynchburg politics, a damaging tornado in Bedford County, a brighter outlook for the old Central Virginia Training Center property and more: Here is a selection of some of the top local news events from 2022.
1: GOP sweep in Lynchburg City Council elections
Three Republican candidates claimed victories in the at-large Lynchburg City Council elections, ousting two incumbents and paving the way for a Republican majority on the governing body.
Stephanie Reed, Martin Misjuns and Larry Taylor were the top three vote-getters in the November election. The three were on the ballot alongside incumbents Treney Tweedy and Beau Wright plus newcomers Patrick Earl and Walter Virgil Jr.
This marked the first year the council election was held in November rather than May, following a law passed last year by the Virginia General Assembly that moved local general elections to November.

Newton scoutmaster recounts harsh weather camping trip
, 2022-11-21 05:15:00,
John Miles said the main goal for his troop of Boy Scouts is to have as many new experiences as possible.
He said the group focuses on exploring new places more than trying to advance in rank.
Miles, 54, joined the Boy Scouts of America when he was 8. Miles worked his way up to Eagle Scout by the time he was 18. To earn his Eagle Scout rank, Miles helped start the Glenn Hilton Trail at Glenn C. Hilton Jr. Memorial Park in 1986, he said.
After becoming an Eagle Scout, Miles was a Boy Scout summer camp counselor for 10 years. He was a scoutmaster for two years when he was around 24 years old, he said.
In 2014, Miles’ oldest son, Davis, now 23, joined the Boy Scouts. Miles started helping with the Cub Scout pack that Davis was in. When Miles’ youngest son, Jackson, 17, joined the Boy Scouts, Miles became a den leader for Jackson’s Cub Scout pack, he said.

North Cove Leisure Club seeks investors for large music venue, outdoor club
, 2022-10-31 07:00:00,
The North Cove Leisure Club, which began as the Blue Ridge Country Club, announced its plans last week to “become the largest outdoor music venue and premium outdoor club celebrating nature, outdoor leisure, and recreation funded by the community.”
Last year, the new owners of the 157-acre property in North Cove announced the property would be transformed into a place for disc golf.
The site at the base of the Linville Falls Mountain Club is being reinvented as a public club celebrating nature, outdoor leisure and recreation. It is owned by Luke Peniston and Kyle Sims, who have a lot in store for the property “dedicated to good times and experiencing outdoors,” according to a news release.
On Oct. 24, the new owners said they were seeking investors as they make further improvements to the place.
The North Cove Leisure Club made news in North Carolina when it officially opened two 18-hole disc golf courses in 2021. Since then, it received national attention with a 611-foot hole-in-one world record throw featured on ESPN’s “SportsCenter Top Ten” and “Good Morning America” that was seen by an estimated 3.5 million viewers, according to the news release.

To date, North Cove has held two national tournaments with two more planned for April that are expected to attract thousands, opened a new restaurant and bar on the grounds and is holding its first wedding in November.
To continue building on this growth, North Cove is expanding with plans to add overnight rentals and increase its wedding venue capacity and is working on a 3,000-plus person capacity outdoor music venue in a space that will be larger than the famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, according to the news release.
“Our intentions are to turn this into a multi-recreational facility,” said co-owner Luke Peniston. “Half of the 157 acres will be dedicated to creating a world-class disc golf facility, think the Augusta National of disc golf.”
Peniston added they want it to be “a family-friendly and community-driven place that will be available to the public.”
“Our long-time goal is have the best outdoor music venue this side of the…

City and citizens gather for recreational opportunity community forum to talk about the future of the golf course | News
, 2022-09-29 02:00:00,
About 50 people attended the Abilene Commission community forum Monday night to hear and share their opinions on recreational opportunities. The forum’s agenda contained ideas of a sports complex, the city purchasing the local golf course and other recreational ideas the public may have. After discussing the sports complex, the conversation moved to the golf course and the public’s opinion on the city should purchasing it.
Tom Canfield started the public comments on the course. Overall, he wants to city to purchase the golf course. He started by saying he has been a member at the course for around 45 years and golf, to him is a lifetime sport. His wife and children learned how to play golf and took those skills with them to where they are living now. Businesses have golf tournaments. Many of the surrounding communities have municipal golf courses. If there is no course in Abilene, children golf programs will shut down.

Grant to boost marketing Bedford County as disc golf destination | Local News
, 2022-09-03 09:15:00,
With five public courses, Bedford County is no stranger to disc golf.
Now, capitalizing on the sport’s growing popularity and local tourism campaign, “Destination Bedford Disc Golf,” a $19,500 grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation to support marketing efforts will help promote the county as a disc golf destination.
“Disc golf in general, in this area, especially Bedford County, has skyrocketed,” said Kenny Palmer, parks and recreation operations coordinator for Bedford County. “Disc golf is, at the moment, by far the most participated-in amenity at our parks. That includes the trail systems, too. Our trails get used quite a bit, but disc golf definitely outnumbers trail users.”
Over the past several years, Bedford County has continually worked to maintain, improve, or expand disc golf courses as a driving tourism attraction, drawing visitors and professional or hobby disc golf players from far and wide. Bedford’s five courses are managed by the county’s parks and recreation department.

“For this particular application, I chose Destination Bedford Disc Golf as the marketing program because people are coming from across the country to play the courses here,” said Nicole Johnson, director of tourism in Bedford County, via email. “The tourism department started promoting disc golf in 2019 with the roll-out of the Destination Bedford branding and marketing campaign. Now I want to take it a step further. I not only want to generate more awareness of the courses here, but also encourage those who come for disc golf to stay longer and discover other activities and attractions.”
When applying for a Virginia tourism grant, Johnson said, the applicant must have a specific project in mind. The grant money will fund email, print, digital, social media, broadcast television and radio advertising for Destination Bedford Disc Golf.
Part of the draw of disc golf is that it is an outdoor activity, accessible to most everyone, and an activity not negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Palmer said.
Whereas many venues and events were shut down or limited, particularly indoor ones, disc golf in the open air lent itself perfectly as something to…
