Frisco is a city in Texas noted for solid public–private partnerships that helped it become one of the state’s fastest-growing cities.

The city’s phenomenal growth has contributed much to creating many free things to do in Frisco.

It also helped that this city is part of the dynamic Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex and straddles Denton and Collin Counties.

Frisco was founded in 1908, but its history can be traced back to 1860.

That year, the community of Lebanon emerged from the cattle trade along Preston Trail (which later became Preston Road).

The residents of this community moved to present-day Frisco in 1902, drawn by the development of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway in the area.

Initially, their settlement was named Emerson but was later changed to Frisco to avoid confusing it with Emberson in Lamar County.

Since then, the city has grown by leaps and bounds, eventually creating a trademark of high-level art, sports, and technology for Frisco.

Check Out the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp at Ford Center

Visit Frisco in the last week of August to catch the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp.

These season-openers of the famous football team are free and open to the public.

The Star at the Ford Center on Cowboys Way hosts these open practices, traditionally held from late afternoon to early evening for two consecutive days.

Besides watching the Cowboys in scrimmages, this event includes team interaction with their fans, like meet-and-greet and autograph signing.

Other activities include interactive games, a live D.J., and a Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders performance.

Check Out the Murals at the Frisco Rail District

Take a walking tour of the Frisco Rail District, its historic downtown.

Most of the city’s picture-perfect murals are in the Frisco Rail District.

This walking tour ideally goes from west to east on Main Street, starting near 2nd Street.

One of the most eye-catching murals along this corridor is “Frisco: Past and Present,” a rendition by freelance illustrator Joshua Boulet.

This bright and bold artwork is a collage of Frisco’s history and the diversity of its culture and people.

It features an interactive spot where the viewers can meld into the mural.

When joining Perfect Duluth Day’s “Saturday Essay” roster, I was asked for a headshot and I submitted this which accompanies my essays. It is a video still from an old GoPro on a stick. The camera has broken through the water, and my face is about to break the surface. Water depth @ 20-30 feet, off the sand beaches of Park Point. It was late summer and I wanted one more batch of diving photos in my Aquaman colors.

I am wearing an orange Aquaman t-shirt with a fishscale print, canonically green swim trunks, flippers, old-school dive mask which accommodates my kingly facial hair, and no snorkel as I am freediving and don’t really need it. Going without a snorkel is a way of working on my breath hold. Plus I read a thing about someone passing out underwater with a snorkel in his mouth, and so I’m fine. I swim around in maximum 30-foot depths with flippers and usually a wetsuit now, a loaner from a friend. I developed a certain cold tolerance in the service of getting the shots I want. But the water was as cold that day as I was able to bear without even a thin wetsuit on. These days I wouldn’t do it without one. But I was feeling hardcore and swam out to sea.

A 20-30-foot depth is a dilletante’s depth among actual freedivers. I’m just a recreational enthusiast with a cosplay fetish and a waterproof camera. Water clarity wasn’t great but I could see well enough down there, expanses of rippled sand rising to meet me.

The rock beaches off the Ledges have fields of submerged boulders and reliable encounters with aquatic life; almost all of my Duluth fish shots are from the Ledges. But this was Park Point and so it was just plains of sand like a desert, the deep beach. I considered myself an explorer while one hand filmed myself doing everything.

I found a tree trunk with a frisbee wedged under it. It was a flying ring thing. That was pretty far out there, kinda just where a flying ring would be if someone on the beach said “Fuck it” and threw it out to sea as hard as they could. The toy sank in 25 feet of water or so, blowing around until it wedged against a log also blowing around down there, but more slowly.

The frisbee picture was taken during the same swim sesh as the headshot. The green hues don’t match because the camera is out of/in the water respectively. Tuomas Merikanto of Finland has won the 2021 World Aeropress Championship (WAC), followed by Maru Mallee of The Netherlands and Brandon Smith of South Africa.

A whopping 48 different competitors from 45 different countries participated in the latest iteration of the WAC, which celebrates excellence in the use of the tubular manual brewing device invented by Aerobie flying disc creator Alan Adler.

The 2021 WAC featured an important first for the free-wheeling competition that dates back to 2008: surrogate baristas.

Due to the ongoing pandemic and to maximize participation among national winners, baristas Dylan Johnson, Fran Lee and Kurtis Tupangaia were tasked with replicating winning recipes for the final event at Bureaux Coffee in Melbourne, Australia.

They performed recipes in front of an esteemed judging panel that included head judge Julie Kerr (Cafe Imports), Danni Choy (Oatly), Ben Presland (Sunny Coffee) and tiebreaker Hugh McDonnell (Slayer Espresso).

Ahead of the finals, competitors were shipped a kit that contained the compulsory competition coffee, a washed-process coffee produced by Pablo Bamaca in San Marcos, Guatemala, supplied by Cafe Imports under the name Finca Nohelia.

Merikanto, a first-time coffee competitor of any kind, took the top spot with a double-filter, inverted Aeropress recipe that featured a relatively low starting water temperature 80°C (176°F).

A thematic tournament perfect for the winter.

When it first showed up in my email, it seemed like such an obvious idea: a one-disc tournament featuring the fan-favorite Kastaplast Berg. The concept was fun, the caddy book was charming, and I had always wanted to try out the Berg. It seemed like Kastaplast had put together an event to match the Trilogy Challenge or Discraft’s Ace Race.

But it wasn’t organized by Kastaplast or a major retailer. It was created by Keegan Allanson and Nick Panozzo, two local Bloomington players who decided to put on the event they always wanted to play – a one-disc tournament that matched the conditions in the dead of the Indiana winter with the aerodynamic challenges of the Berg.

The Kastaplast Berg (1,1,0,2) is an unusual disc. It is high-shoulder rounded putter designed with a thumb track and a distinct puddle top. It has a strange hand feel and a very short, dumping flight. It is slightly overstable and, at a 1 speed, very slow. Its lack of glide makes it hard to throw very far but makes it great for backhand and forehand approach shots that fall out of the sky and land soft. The Berg is the kind of disc that generates strong reactions. Although many players hate its weird flight and feel, it has also built a small army of devoted fans.

Panozzo says the idea began to form in summer 2021. “I owned a Berg or two, but I didn’t bag it at the time,” he said. “Everyone that did play with the Berg loved it and swore by it. Also, the darn thing was hard to find. I remember going to Skybreed Discs, when it was still more of a walk-in shop, and the guys working there would tell me the Berg would sell out in the first 10 minutes every time they had a drop.” It was popular but unusual, the perfect disc to build an event around.

To get a large number of hard-to-find Bergs while the supply chain was still struggling with the pandemic disc shortage was a challenge. Panozzo contacted Discs Unlimited, a US distributor for Kastaplast. They were initially wary about promising 56 blank discs but agreed to move forward. “They offered a discounted rate to some guy who wrote a random email,” Panozzo laughed, “so I’ll take that as a win.” Discs Unlimited couldn’t make any promises about which colors or plastics would be available, but the event was a go.

On Thursday late afternoon, the World AeroPress Championship took place in Montreal and I’m still caffeinated.

For those unfamiliar with this revolutionary way of making coffee, the AeroPress is a simple device that allows you to brew coffee quickly and easily. It was created by Alan Adler, inventor of the Frisbee and other products, and has been used by baristas around the world for its ability to produce rich, smooth cups of coffee in 30 seconds or less. The AeroPress is easy to use: put ground coffee into the chamber at the top, add hot water then push down on the plunger until all of the liquid has passed through into your mug below. There are two ways to brew using an AeroPress: standard and inverted (see below).

The AeroPress was created in 2005 by Aerobie, Inc., a company known for its flying products such as Frisbees and boomerangs. The idea for this new coffee maker had been brewing for about 20 years and was finally put into production after being awarded a patent in 2005.

Aerobie, Inc. is the creator of both the original AeroPress and Frisbee (I’ll bet you didn’t know THAT!). The company was founded in Palo Alto, California in 1972 by Alan Adler. The original AeroPress was invented by Alan Adler in 2005 after he had trouble making good coffee with a French press at home; Adler wanted to create a simpler way for people to brew coffee that would produce less sediment than other brewing methods.

The AeroPress revolutionized coffee making by being simple, quick, easy to use and clean, cheap, and portable. It’s also the perfect travel companion—you can pack it up with you anywhere.

The name AeroPress was inspired by pressurized air. It’s a combination of the words “aerial” and “press,” both of which refer to the act of pressing something.

Saturday, December 17, 2022, brings with it a new, beginner-friendly disc golf course to Central Arkansas. Bryant Parks and Recreation has donated the original nine disc golf baskets that were in Bishop Park to the Bryant School District. The disc golf community has rallied to raise the needed funds for installing the baskets and necessary supplies to create something for all to enjoy on the campus of Bryant High School. This will be the first disc golf course in Central Arkansas on a public school campus.

The ribbon cutting ceremony and the first parent/student Doubles round will start at 11:00 a.m. Brief remarks will be made by Bryant Parks and Recreation personnel, Bryant School District personnel, and LeeWood Thomas, the course designer and project lead. After the remarks, school staff will cut the ribbon, then the parents and students making up the Doubles teams will have a brief players meeting and get their fairway assignments. The general public will be welcome to play the course after the first round festivities conclude at approximately 2:00 p.m.
